New Novice User: Cannot ping eth0

After listening to Security Now (with allot of it unfortunately above my head) I decided to build an mini ITX computer and install Astaro Security Gateway Free Home Edition. Just to let people know my background is medicine not computers so I am sorry if I seem a little naive.

I have installed it on the mini ITX machine. The hardware setup I have is as follows:
Internal Network (eg desktop) > Netgear Wireless Router (WNR3500)>Astaro eth0>eth1 ADSL modem

The initial problem that is holding me back is that I cannot connect from the internal network (desktop) to ASG.

I can ping the cable router but cannot ping the ASG.

Desktop IP details are 192.168.2.105; Netmask 255.255.255.0; Gateway 192.168.2.100; DNS server 192.168.2.100. I assume these are the settings that I should have?

Would it be correct to think that the problem is with the cable router communicating with the Astaro box?

I have connected the ethernet cable from the desktop to the cable router ethernet port. Then the internet port on the cable modem to the eth0 port on the Astaro box. Silly question but is this correct?

    Damien, don't use the WAN port at all on the Netgear; use it only as a switch and wireless access point.  You need to choose between using the DHCP server in the Netgear and the one in the Astaro.

    If you were to use the WAN port of the Netgear, you could leave both DHCP servers running, but you would need to set the one in the Netgear to a different subnet (like 192.168.3.0/24).  If you are tempted to make this choice, you should google on "double nat" to understand the limitations.

    Hi Bob,
    Thanks for your advice. I changed the eth0 cable from the internet port and put it in an ordinary ethernet port on the wireless router.
    I have attached pictures just in case I have done something really stupid (always possible)


    Wireless Router

    Astaro Box

    ADSL Modem

    I then tried pinging the Astaro box and no luck
    I could ping the wireless router (192.168.2.1) but not the Astaro box (192.168.2.100) or the ADSL modem (192.168.0.1)


    My TCP/IP properties of the computer I am using to obtain the IP and DNS server addresses is set to automatic.

    Is there something really obvious that I am missing?

    Just in case it would help people I have attached some of the wireless router setting in case these are the problem.

    Hook it up like this
    Modem --- Astaro Eth1---Astaro eth0--- wireless

    I am not sure about the blue cable you are using. Is it a crossover cable?? Try switching with the yellow cable and see if you can ping astaro.

    I have the ADSL modem connected to astaro eth1 (yellow ethernet cable) and then Astaro eth0 to wireless router (blue ethernet cable)? Is this what you mean? If so unfortunately this is still not working [:S]

    One more thing you might want to try is change the way the cables are plugged in.
    So lets say you have your wireless in eth0 right now, unplug it and try plugging it into eth1 and try pinging and see if you get results.

    I tried both combinations but still couldn't ping the Astaro box.
    wireless router ethernet port> eth0 astaro box
    wireless router ethernet port> eth1 astaro box
    Again I can ping the wireless box but not the astaro box.

    Not sure if it is of any relevance but I can access (ping) the router box when I am using the wireless router as a WAN.

    Could it still be possible that there is a setting problem with the wireless router stopping communication with the Astaro box.

    The problem is that you are trying a custom/advanced network. If you have a crossover cable and can connect to astaro box directly it would make things a lot simpler. That way once you have astaro basic setup done and all the interfaces functioning, you can troubleshoot each device seperately.

    The way it is right now, I am not sure if your wireless router is blocking access or if there is some kind of hardware conflict in astaro.[:$]

    Hi,
    a couple of things you might have missed which I don't see mentioned in your posts.
    Do you have ping enabled on the ASG
    Network security -> ICMP (tab) -> enable "firewall is ping visible".

    You don't need the Upnp enabled on any of your internal devices.

    Thanks for your help. I have just bought a crossover cable. Having not used one before I just want a little advice.
    I take it I plug it in from the computer I am going to use to access the web interface of ASG. Then the other end goes into Eth0?
    What is the next step? Just log in with https://192.168.2.100:4444? Should I be able to ping the ASG from the other machine?
