[7.404] Cannot delete interface/cannot reconfig

I have an ASL with 3 ETH cards, due to some config changes i want to swap the function of 2 of those cards(one is WAN, other is LAN2, i want to swap them).

so i proceeded to try and delete the LAN2 interface and i get an error "syntax incorrect", WTF!, it doesn't let me delete the interface [:@], i try to change it's name, ip, comments, everything inside with no problem, but no deletion.

Ok i say, so i leave it as is, change the IP parameters, set default GW, delete the old WAN, check for masq and PF rules... all done, right?.
wrong, no traffic goes out or in the ASL box if i do that, it's like it doesn't even take it as a valid route or GW(i'm sure it has something to do with that syntac error above).
at that point, nothing worked, i was wasting 2 hours with no inet connection so i had to revert to a backup (which also didn't let me delete the IF).

Now i have 2 options, i open a case and see if they can fix it, or reinstall and restore, my fear is that if that reinstall and restore WON'T fix the problem i'd have wasted a looot of time and all the logs stored on the box for nothing.

any ideas on what can i check?

    A restore of the configuration doesn't affect the logs or other stored information.  Try that first.

    I'm afraid I haven't tried the experiment you describe.  I agree that the best approach may to reinstall.  You can move the logs off the box first - there are other threads here that explain different ways to do that or ask Astaro for help.  If you're using Mail Security, you'll want to force dielivery of any possible non-spams.

    Tell us what your configuration change was and what you want to accomplish.  Maybe someone here will have an easier suggestion.

    i've already tried backups or i'd have a very dead box by now.
    i'm detailing the config change in the first post, some clarification:
    i have 3 NICS, and i want to swap the internet connection between 2 of those nics, the only 2 optiosn to do that are:
    a) delete one interface, then select the hardware from the dropdown of the other, recreate the deleted one and then bust a cap recreating/reconfiguring everything that pointed to that interface.
    b) reconfigure the IP parameters of both interfaces, then reconfigure everything again(a little less cap bustin')

    the A option, does not work when you hit the delete button returns error: "One of the values you entered is syntactically or logically incorrect."

    B option does not work either, it's like the IF never reconfigures and traffic gets stuck, no packet enter or leaves the box

    Why do you want to move the internet connetion?

    because it shouldn't have been on that NIC in the first place, it ended there due to graver problems at the time and the need to rush it.
    the thing is that i'm experiencing packet loss on the ASL box(if i connect another device directly it doesn't do it that badly) and the other two NICs exhibit too high of a CPU usage when passing traffic(limits usable BW to 10mbps)

    These don't sound like "usual" problems; can you tell us what your configuration is?  Please include brands an model numbers of motherboard and NICs.

    Have you tried changing the MTU on the External NIC?  Or setting the card to half-duplex at a fixed speed?  Or swapping out the Ethernet cable it uses?

    config, Athlon XP1900+, 768MB RAM, one onboard Via rhine II nic, two Intel Pro/100+ NICS

    one intel es LAN, the other should be LAN2 but it's currently on the VIA, 2nd Intel is the WAN connection.
    cables are OK, haven't tried changing MTU nor speed/duplex(they're running 100mbps FDX in auto)

    First, try changing to fixed 10mbps (assuming that that's faster than your internet connection).  Then try that with half duplex.  Then find out if your ISP/modem (DSL, Cable, ???) expects, for example, an MTU of 1420 instead of 1500.

    Have you checked the HCL to be sure that the NICs are supported?

    i'll try changing it with ifconfig or ethtool/mii-tool(can't remember which one)
    AFAIk ISP works with standard ethernet, when testing with a notebook connected directly to the router, i got no packet loss and the nic was set to auto negotiate(100 FDX) with 1500byte frame.
    changed MTU to 1492 to test, no change

    yup, all cards are tested in HCL

    Change these from the 'Hardware' tab of 'Network >> Interfaces'.  The issue doesn't exist with all hardware.
