What dual core motherboard are you using?

If you're not using proxies and AV, just IPS, a dual-core Atom 330 would probably be powerful enough, especially once 7.5 comes out (or the beta) with SMP Snort.
Should run around 45watts for the whole system.
Several people here are using the MSI Industrial IM-945GC Atom Mini-ITX Mainboard.

I'm using an Atom 270 which works fine for my 10mbps FIOS but I can't guarantee it'd be good for 30mbps.

If you want to use the http and smtp or pop proxies with dual antivirus, something much faster would be a good idea.

I am using one of the dual core atom motherboards.

I have between 6 and 10 active IP addresses
I use the following functions
1/. http/s proxy with https scanning enabled
2/. ftp proxy
3/. sockd proxy
4/. pop3 proxy
5/. smtp proxy outgoing
6/. VoIP security with 2 ATAs
7/. IPS/IDS but only for the external interface
8/. time managed web and packet filter profiles
9/. DHCP with static addressing
10/. VLANs
11/. Dydns
12/. ASG as the time source
13/. ASG as the DNS
14/. Static DNS entries

My ADSL2+ service runs around 4.5m/800k

With the current 7.470b release my memory usage is around 35% peaking at just over 40%.
My CPU usage spikes at about 10% and averages around 1.5%, but idles around 0.3%. The spikes in the reports are different to the webadmin page.

My configuration is in my signature.

I started out with an old PC and have gradually worked my way down to the Atom 330 which is a bit of an over kill. I think Barryg's single core Atom 270 would be more than sufficient, but I couldn't find one of those at the time I bought the 330.
Barryg's device is way more efficient than mine, is doesn't have any fans where as mine has 3, the weakest one being the chipset one which I recently replaced witha much slower and more robust unit.

That should give you lots of food for thought.

I will be blocking a lot of countries/areas.  China, Russia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Eastern Block Countries, and a some others.  In other programs this has taken a lot of RAM and a fast CPU.  I am not sure how Astaro will scale with the number of CIDR blocks I will have. I will be using dual AV.  I will also use most of the other functions.

blocking in PF rules and all proxies. That won't use much ram if you have 2gb in the system and CPU shouldn't have that much affect because you aren't processing the packets.

It is my understanding that to determine that a packet must be dropped requires some level of processing. The packet header must be read to see where the packet came form or is going to (egress) to see if it matches a rule.  Won't this take a lot of CPU speed to do this?  My current program that does this loads the rules into memory and compares the packets to the rules in memory. How does Astaro handle PF rules?

The number of CIDR notations I am currently running is huge. When I get home, I can upload the xls file if you want. 

Myabe I am not understanding how this functions in Astaro. Any help would be great.

Hi,
Astaro uses Linux IPTables to do packet filtering... this is very efficient in terms of CPU as the 'Tables' are hash tables which are VERY fast. Depending on how many rules / definitions you have, there will of course be _some_ memory usage but I doubt it would be very significant.

The IPS and HTTP /email AntiVirus are the usual subjects of concern in terms of CPU and RAM usage with Astaro.

BTW, if you're trying to block entire continents, it's usually more efficient to use the IP Registrar's nets/supernets than the individual allocations... e.g. APNIC can be covered with, last time I checked, 13 CIDR definitions.

I have changed the motherboard, because the kacpid service took every new start 100% of cpu, after changing the board it was ok.
