Please help with choosing hardware

The setup in my signature below cost about $300 for the motherboard, CPU, case, and power supply. It has 2 Intel gigE NICS, is fanless and very low power, and should be powerful enough for home use. The board and case only seem to be available via mail order however; I used Logic Supply. You'd need to add 1-2GB laptop DDR2 RAM (under $30) and a laptop hard drive.

A used computer is also a good option; older hardware usually tends to have good Linux driver support.

If you're going to buy something at Fry's, you're going to need to do some research... start with the HCL and then try to find a motherboard with a chipset and NICs on that list.
I'd recommend a good brand such as Asus or MSI or GigaByte. Be wary of things advertised on sale at Fry's; they're often refurbished or discontinued products.

Take a look at other user's signatures for other hardware ideas.

I can get used locally with not enough ram but don't think anyplace local sells the old ram kind or dual nic card stuff. I don't know though. I can go $200 or less locally used with 256mb ram to 512mb ram and 3com nic for $2.50 each. Pc is like boot only.

Fry's usually has all kinds of RAM.

I'd recommend upgrading to 1GB, but if you're not going to use any of the HTTP or SMTP content scanning features (e.g. no proxies) you can get by with 512MB OK. 256MB would be unusable.

I would use av protection , ips, block a category of sites. Spyware protection then the default stuff. 

I think frys only sells ddr2 and maybe DDR but not sure. Not sure what kind of ram these used pcs have at re-pc. Pentium4 and some athlon maybe and celeron. But I'd think 1.5-2gb.

You'll need at least 768MB of RAM then; 1GB preferred.

Fry's does carry SDRAM, but they don't always stock it as well.
512MB SDRAM dimms are relatively expensive though.

Ok so I'm looking at getting an emachines et1161-05 for the pc and then add a nic for dual. Now I wonder what nic to get at frys. Any ideas and would this pc work ok?

I'm not gonna get a pc yet. So I'm just gonna wait a bit. I don't wanna rush it.

while mine isn't quite as low power as Barry's it is still very low power.

Mine uses standard DDR2 memory. I put an Intel 1000 pro NIC and use vlans for my internal connections.
If you do get the same board as mine, I would recommend that your buy a small 40mm fan and replace the chipset fan. The fan on my system didn't like being on its side and died after about 2 months.

My system has 3 fans, case, chipset and power supply.

I really would like to use asg I'm just not sure what to do. I'm kind of nervouse or a bit uneasy for some reason. Maybe cus I am not sure about buying a pc from frys and then adding a second nic. I'll have to of course wipe the system clean. I would need to make a backup of the pc incase I returned it. It has to be returned in exact same condition as when they sell it. Then part of me might like to use the pc for windows. 

There is that emachines I mentioned which has vista basic so no areo. Ok if I only use asg on it but I don't even know if I can add a second nic. I won't get a used of since there's no warranty and no 100% that asg would work on it. 

So I'm kind of a bit confused/lost and indecisive. It's hard for me to make choices.
