starting off with VMWare ASG ap pliance

Ok, Here's the deal. I'm unemployed, and looking to expand my skills. I'm figuring I can't go too wrong knowing about network security.

Presently, I don't have dedicated hardware that I can run ASG on.

I am attempting to make use of the VMWare appliance to familiarize myself with ASG.

I think the problem has to do with the settings for the real vs. virtual network interfaces.

bear with me, because I want to make sure I include everything that could be relevant.

Cable Modem

Asus Router WL500g-P-->usb to a laser printer

Netgear switch
\/
Multiple client machines and devices including a T-Bird 800 W2K server, running DC, DHCP, DNS and other services

I have to run my network on the 192.168.0.0/24 block because for my mom to VPN to work, 192.168.1.0/24 fails. (apparently that is the private IP range for their VPN gear, which confuses the hell out of the network stack if I use 192.168.1.0/24)

I've tried everything I can think of. any suggestions?

    Hi timotheusd,

    what is the problem you are having, and what exactly are you trying to setup? Are you trying to setup Astaro in vmware as a gateway between your physical network and the internet? 

    Assuming that your problem is how to setup the vmware networking portion,  you will need to take some care, since you may be plugging your internet connection into a physical port on that server. A simple precaution you can take is to disable TCP/IP on that interface in the HOST OS (you will need more than one NIC). That way, it is not directly exposed to the internet. 
    Next, you need to bind your virtual vmware networks to your physical network interfaes. You can do this  in the Virtual Network Settings screen in VMware, on the Host Virtual Network Mapping tab. Bind the port connected to the internet to one vmnet, and the port connected to the local network to another. Then, on your Astaro virtual machine, connect the first virtual network port to the vmnet bound to your internal network, and the second to the internet connected vmnet. This will allow your virtual astaro to communicate with both networks.

    for the moment, I would be happy to have things set up such that all network traffic on the Host OS (Vista 32-bit) gets routed through the VM.

    effectively I would be creating this

    could the fact that the external network is on the same subnet as what the ASG VM wants to use as the internal network be confusing things... (I noticed that the real ASG defaults to 192.168.2.0/24, but that's neither here nor there)

    That would definitely cause a routing issue. you should never have multiple separate interfaces with overlapping subnets. Choose a separate address and subnet for the Astaro's internal interface, and you should have better results.
