ASG backup working in ASL?

hi,

customer needs to upgrade from 6 to 7.4.

As he only got one box and I don't want a long network outage I thought about using his ASG backup in a vmware ASL installation, configure and clean up whats necessary, then upgrade the ASG to 7.402 and restore the prepared configuration. 

so in short: is it possible to restore a ASG backup in a ASL, configure the features which are lost when upgrading (smtp/web proxies)  and restore this  ASL backup back to the ASG?

    That should work, with one possible caveat.  The backup includes the license, and that might not work on a non-ASG device.  You might need to gen a temporary/demo software license for the upgrade process, then re-apply the ASG license after you restore the 7.4 backup to it.

    Let us know if the temporary license was needed.

    cool, thanks for the hint with the lic - haven't thought about that so far. [8-)]

    will post here about possible issues with the license. 

    btw. as I was working with ASL for the last years and never saw an ASG - is any USB cdrom working with the ASG or is it some special astaro usb cdrom like the astaro ssi usb stick? [:S]

    I think any USB CDROM will work.  We sell both ASG and ASL; an example is a church that has many rare users; an ASG120 is more than they need, and the licensing is much less expensive than 25-user ASL.
