Unable to reach newly installed Astaro Gateway

Hello,

I recently installed Astaro Security Gateway Free Home Edition on an old Pentium 4 computer that I plan to use as a gateway.  The box has a built in NIC interface and I purchased a second NIC card, so the box now has two NIC interfaces.

I installed Astaro with a bootable CD and everything seems to have completed successfully—both NICs were recognized during setup.

The administrative computer is connected with the Astaro computer by means of a crossover cable.  The Astaro appears to boot correctly and displays the following information on-screen after booting up
192.168.2.100
login:

The problem is that I am unable to log into Astaro computer.  

The administrative computer is running Vista Home Premium; I have disabled the McAfee firewall, but when I try to go to 192.168.2.100:4444 I repeatedly get the message that Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at 192.168.2.100:4444  

I tried to log into the Astaro computer using a Windows XP machine and had the same problem. I have verified that the crossover cable is working.

I am not sure where the problem lies and would be grateful for any suggestions.

    Have you temporarily asssigned the IP PC to the 192.168.2.0/24 subnet?  Are you using https instead of http?  Is the Windows firewall disabled?

    Thanks for your input.

    The Windows firewall is disabled; I have tried it with both https and http--neither makes a difference.

    How would I assign the IP PC to the 192.168.2.0/24 subnet?  I have never done this before, so if you could, could you provide some steps/instructions as to how I would do this?

    Rather than tell you how to do it, I think I'll help you more by telling you how to find it.  Once you see how to make the change in Vista, you'll find it easy to do the same in XP if ever you need to do that.

    • On your Vista PC, click on [Start], then on [Help and Support].
    • Select 'Internet, Networking, and Wireless', then, near the bottom, 'Setting up a home network'.
    • On the far right, you'll see a list of choices that will let you jump to the section of the page you need: 'Changing TCP/IP settings'; click on that, then on 'Change TCP/IP settings'.
    • Follow these instructions.  Change only the IPv4 settings.  Use the internal IP of the Astaro, 192.168.2.100, as the gateway.


    When you click [OK], it may tell you you need to reboot, but you don't.  Now, you'll be able to login with https://192.168.2.100:4444/.

    If you try that and get hung up, please don't hesitate to ask again, but I think working through the instructions on changing your IP wil be helpful as you move forward.

    Thanks a million!  You certainly have been helpful.  Unfortunately, I will have to work on this in a few days when I have more time.  I will let you know how it works out.

    Your advice was spot on.  [:)] I can now log into the Astaro machine!  Thanks very much for taking the time to help.  

    I should mention to any users who may read this thread that in my case, it was necessary to restart the admin computer before the new TCP/IP settings worked.
