Re-Installation / backup restoration gripes

Hi,
I had to re-install my home firewall last night, and ran into a few annoyances during the restore of my backup file...

Used the 7.401 ISO...

1. restoring backup from USB key does not work for me.
I put file 'me.dyndns.org_7.401_2009-04-09_01-15.abf' into the root of a 128MB USB stick, FAT32 format, empty except for one empty directory
During boot, Astaro said
:: Backup restore (pause) :: Starting Notification daemon done

Note both of those items were on the same line.
I tried rebooting twice with the key installed.
This isn't the best-quality USB key I have, but it was the only one that was empty. It's possible it's the key's fault, but a little more info from the firewall would have been nice.

2. must go through "Basic System Setup" before restoring backup from webmin
This is a nuisance and slows down restoring by a couple of minutes.
I realize that the SSL keys are re-generated during this process, but istm that could be done during the restore.

3. difficult to tell when backup reconfig is completed (beeps would be nice)

4. My IPSEC Site-to-Site VPNs did NOT reconnect after the restore.
The Site-to-Site VPN status page showed them as down.
I had to disable and re-enable the Connection, and now it works.

5. A reminder to reset all of the console passwords would be nice during/after a restore on a new machine.

    Barry, Isn't 4 supposed to be one of the fixes in 7.402?

    A couple of things...

    As Bob said, I believe #4 may be addressed in 7.401, but the particular issue they address may just have to do with reboots, not sure about that one.  #5 is a good idea (perhaps either a notification on the Dashboard warning the Admin that they are set to defaults, or maybe an email notification as well?).  As for the backup not restoring from USB... try another USB port; I've found on some systems that 1 port (normally the first one enumerated) works when others don't.  I think I have noticed that when i watch the console and have a backup detected on a USB stick during boot that the system does indicate it's restoring a file, I think it even showed the filename (It's been a while, but I think I remember it that way).

    I'm pretty sure that it says "Skipped" if there is no backup to restore.
    In my case, it paused, and then said nothing, not even a carriage return before going on.
    I think it tried to read the backup, and failed silently.

    I'm looking at the logfiles now, but I don't see anything about backups or restores except for the one through webadmin (index.plx).

    Any ideas what I should be looking for in the logs?

    I don't think it writes anything to a log (if it does, I don't know where it goes)... hmm..

    More gripes...

    Had a hard drive failure today; did a re-install from 7.402 ISO; restored backup from USB during first boot.

    After the backup, the login prompt still showed the default IP address (192.168.2.100 or whatever it is).

    I could login internally to webmin, but I couldn't get on the internet.

    'route' showed no gateway set, but webmin showed the correct IP and gateway set on EXT.

    The system had been up for 5min, and 'top' showed little activity.

    Rebooting fixed it.

    I've re-installed 7.402 twice today, and restored the backup from a USB stick; both times I had to reboot afterwards to get online. I could ping the ISP gateway, but no futher.
