Licensing dilemma...

Hello all. Question about licensing: I am currently running the ASG v7.401 and I am running into an issue with the ‘maximum users’. I am currently at 9, but here is the issue – I only have 6 computers connected. Three of the computers connected are laptops that use wireless AND lan connections. Each NIC has a reservation via the MAC address. So Laptop01 LAN=192.168.1.100 and wireless=192.168.1.101. How can I work around this within the ASG?

    that's the thing - I really like this. I was thinking there might be a way to let the ASG know this is the same computer under devices, but not really sure how to go about it.

    Hi edwelly, 

    i am not 100% sure if that works, but a fried of mine encountered the same problem, he than used static DHCP mappings and assigned bound the same ip on the LAN and WLAN connection. That way each computer should use the same ip adress.

    As an alternative we will host the next beta version AG within the next months, if you participate and post in the beta section bugs or impressions, we issue PowerUser upgrade keys that raise the limit from 10->50 users. That should be sufficient [:)].

    Good morning Gert. Couue of questions:
    1) how to you set the wireless and LAN to the same IP? I might be missing the obivious, but since I have a docking station, there are times when I use both connections.
    2) how and where do I sign up? I love this thing thus the reason for wanting to work around/through these issues. I would more than happy to try out a new version. I ahve another desktop doing nothing at the moment

    You're right that you couldn't use both at once.  What advantage do you get from having simultaneous connections?

    Advantage?? None really. Just easy that way since 2 of the 3 have docking stations. I don't see myself as going over since I have 9 at the moment, just thought there would be a way around this.

    Wireless laptops are a pain for this, most of the time you run them on a wired connection, but eventually someone wants them in the boardroom or similar so another IP get's used on wireless.

    Hmm... I may need to reevaluate how I am utilizing wireless on my home network.

    edwelly: on your laptop(s), you probably have either a physical switch, or a logical (software) choice to enable and disable the wireless.  I would imagine that it's very easy to access and turn off.

    Yes sir. That is what I will be doing on at least one them. That will give me 2 available for now.

    You could alternatively hide your wireless segment behind some other NAT device thus rendering them as "one" address to the ASG.  Of course, this would mean managing more than one firewall.  Would be relatively simple behind something like a Linksys or something...

    Its not been that long ago that astaro had 32000 connection limit on home user license. Then it suddenly went down to 1000 and all of us kissed torrents good bye. You do the math and tell me why.[:(]

    1000 is still enough for a conservatively-configured p2p client.
    I run both eMule and Azureus/Vuze, and the only reason I was hitting the limit (which actually seemed to be 1500) was because I had raised the default settings in the clients.

    Besides, the beta testers got much more generous licenses recently.

    I'd imagine the reason it went down to 1000 is to prevent folks with Home User licenses from "cheating" and using the generously-provided free license as a commercial license... I have a lot of commercial customers with 75 or so protected clients that don't exceed 1000 connections on a daily basis.

    You nailed it on the head Bruce. I was just pointing out that the double nat thing has been tried so much that astaro had to protect their business interest and limit the connections. On the flip side, we got virus protection, p2p protection etc. 
    Now with 50 beta test license we are also getting clustering and 32000 connections again[;)] Makes p2p and p*** surfing simultaneously much snappier[:D]
