ASG 110 - Home License?

Hi,

I'm currently using the ASG v7.401 virtual appliance primarily as an email proxy within my home network, and have a free home license from MyAstaro.

I'd like to make ASG my primary firewall/router.  I picked up a used ASG 110 specifically for this purpose.  However, I've run into a couple of snags...


  • I'm unable to upload my home use license file to the ASG.  I get an error stating the license is either invalid or cannot be used with the ASG hardware I have.  In trawling through the BB I've found a few mentions of people using a home license with an ASG hardware appliance, but nothing definitive.  Is it possible to get a home use license for an ASG 110, and if so how?
  • The ASG 110 has v6.303 loaded, and the unit came with a license that does not appear to include Up2Date support.  If it is possible to get a home use license, would this automatically upgrade the unit to 7.401 or would I need to pay a reseller to re-image the device (the v7 release notes made mention of a required firmware upgrade by a reseller for v6 hardware appliances)?


I'm really hoping it's possible to get this 110 onto a home license, and up to ASG 7.4 without having to go to a reseller.  If neither of these are possible I guess it's going back on eBay and I'll be back to a virtual or software appliance (seems a shame though given I've got the hardware - I don't see any reason why a home license would be designed *not* to work with it).

Any help much appreciated, including any pointers to good resellers in the case that getting both my issues addressed aren't as expensive as I think they might be.

    You will need to download the 7.4 ISO of the Software Appliance (ASL) and reload with that.  The free license cannot be applied to the version on the Hardware Appliance you have.  The only real difference is that you can't see the nifty picture of the ASG on the dashboard.

    Thanks Bob.  Looks like the "Restore a Backup" function on ASG 6.303 is the most likely place to upload an ISO image, but it fails (probably not surprising given it's not a configuration backup, but an ISO image).  I used the most recent ISO for ASG 7.4.  Is there somewhere else in the UI where an ISO image can be used to reinstall onto a hardware appliance (e.g. throwing the ISO onto a USB drive and booting the ASG up from that instead of the firmware, assuming the BIOS supports that)?  Thanks.

    That's exactly how to do it. Burn the ISO on a CD-R, put it in a USB-CD drive, connect it to the astaro and reboot.
    The astaro will automagically upgrade itself from that CD.

    How much are used 110's or 120's going for, and how much power do they use? Are they noisy at all?

    I picked mine up on eBay for $199.  It's a first generation ASG 110 (so no RAM upgrade is possible unfortunately).  Not sure of the power consumption (I'd have to check the power adapter, which I can do tomorrow if that's useful), but the thing runs almost silent - no fan noise or power hum, just a few faint noises when the drive is being accessed.

    Yes, please do check the adapter.
    I'd been holding out for a very low-power Atom-based system, but Astaro doesn't support the motherboard I want to get yet, so this might be a good alternative.

    Ram is maxed at 512MB?
    Do you know the CPU? VIA?

    The power supply output is rated at 24V, 2.5A.  I'm not sure how much power it actually consumes in practice though, given this is just the DC output.

    My ASG 110 has a serial number starting A00001, which from what I've read on the BB has a hardware limitation of 512MB.  Astaro apparently has a trade-in option for early 110s which either gets them up to the current 1GB memory or at least supports expansion to that amount.  Given I'm intending to install the ASG software on this device and use a home license, I suspect I may be out of luck getting a hardware upgrade from a reseller.

    OK... worst case that's 60watts + whatever inefficiency in the PS.

    The Atom I wanted to build would need 24W, worst case, but of course the PS would be bigger.
