Personal use license questions and suggestions

Hi all,

I've been using the ASG software for personal use for a week or so and think it's great!  I'd like to thank Astaro for letting home users try the system for free.

However, I'm already hitting the 10 user limit even though there's only 2 people in the house (dogs and baby excluded).  Part of this is because I've been reconfiguring my home network to work with the ASG (switching fixed and DHCP addresses around, etc) so some devices have got counted twice.  From threads that I have read, I guess I need to wait a week for the old IP's to time out (suggestion: a refresh option would be useful).

My bigger problem is that I have more than 10 IP's on my network: 2 work laptops (one for me and one for my wife), 1 personal laptop, 1 media server, 2 media clients, 1 Dish Network DVR, 1 Roku NetFlix player, 1 XBox, 3 wi-fi access points (yes, I need that many without rewiring my house), 1 VoIP access point, 1 DSL router, 1 wi-fi enabled personal media player.  I'm also going to add a webcam in the baby's room and hope to add more VoIP phones soon.

So, that's 15 on a day-to-day basis and I could be up to 20 by the end of the year.  I'm an IT enthusiast, so from time to time I'll have other equipment on my network as I "play" with it.  But this is all legitimate personal use, for 2 "real" users (mainly 1!).

So, first I have a polite request that the personal use license is increased to, say, 20-25.  Most (all?) people who are using ASG, an enterprise class system, at home are IT enthusiasts.  These people mostly have a large number of IP addressable devices.  With VoIP, DVR's, wi-fi printers and Internet TV devices now mass market products, even the average person is approaching 10 IP's at home.

These IT enthusiasts, many of whom are in the industry, are the people who recommend Astaro products as a result of their personal use.  Surely, that's why Astaro grants a personal use license (that and the free support and beta testing)?  It makes business sense, and I'm sure that I will be recommending Astaro once I've had a chance to give it a real test drive.  However, after only a few days of use it now seems obsolete and I'm unfortunately faced with decommissioning my ASG before I've even tried many features.

The 10 IP license is now an outdated limit for personal use.  It was perhaps appropriate when first introduced, but I believe that it is now time to revise it.

My second request (as a fall-back if the first cannot be granted), is that I understand how the "users" are counted.  I obviously now understand that a "user" is an IP address, and not a person as originally thought.  Not all of my devices need to access the Internet, and if I don't use the ASG as a DHCP server then some don't need to talk to it at all.

So, what triggers the ASG to count an address as one of the "users"?  If 20 devices are all on the same LAN segment as the ASG, does the ARP cache in the ASG mean that the ASG will "see" all 20 and count them?  Does responding to an ARP request trigger the count, even if that's all that happens?  Does it monitor the network in promiscuous mode and count addresses between parties other than its self?  Or, do the devices need to try and route traffic through the ASG to be counted?  Or is there some other method in use?

I need to understand this better so that I know how to isolate the devices that don't need to use the ASG.  For example, I might construct separate VLAN's.  However, my devices need to talk to each other, so I want to minimize the isolation.

Of course, all this added complexity is time consuming, overly complex, may require additional equipment (switches, etc) and is very frustrating.  Hopefully Astaro will differentiate between legitimate personal users who want to explore the ASG functionality on their home networks, and businesses trying to get around licensing restrictions.

I'm aware of the additional licenses granted to power users of this board, but honestly I don't have much time for that any more (time with family has now replaced the IT all-nighters that I used to spend when I was younger).  Like may other home users, I'll contribute by spreading the word in the industry.

This is a great product.  Astaro - please let us home users explore it fully.  You'll be helping us help you.

    This has been discussed ad-nauseum in numerous threads.

    In summary:

    Basically, if Astaro upped the license limit to 25 for home use, many businesses would abuse it.
    (Unless Astaro crippled the functionality in the home use license which none of us want).

    Astaro will count IPs as follows:
    A) 1 License for every IP that *traverses* the firewall (Not counting B)
    B) License for every IP issued by it's onboard DHCP

    So...

    Devices that do not need web access, set to static IP and/or use a different DHCP server.
    Set their default gateway to 0.0.0.0

    Astaro will no longer count these devices in it's license.

    Remember that Astaro remembers IP's for a while so they won't just go away right after you remove a device.

    There are a number of ways to get around this, using double NAT etc, however, usually more trouble than it's worth.

    Given that very few, if any higher end commercial firewall vendors give out functional licenses I think we're lucky to get 10IPs.

    Astaro will from time to time run open betas of it's products.  Usually, if you contribute to beta testing, Astaro will give out free 25IP licenses or similar to contributing beta testers as a thankyou.  (One just finished for 7.400).

    Your WiFi APs shouldn't get counted if you only plug in the LAN interfaces, not the WANs, assuming you only try to manage them from your LAN.

    I don't intend to start a protracted conversation over this.  Astaro's business is its business.  However, I do want to briefly give a response.

    I agree that increasing the license limit will result in some additional business use.  However, a business that can't otherwise afford to buy the product isn't losing Astaro money as it is unlikely to have have purchased anyhow.  However, it is building the brand.  As the business grows, it is more likely to purchase the product and the several people who use the product will go on to recommend it and perhaps buy it in future jobs.  Limited "free" small business use should be looked at more as a valuable viral marketing opportunity rather than a threat, IMHO.

    I'm a management consultant in the telecommunications industry, and have owned a successful software business, so I have some experience with marketing this type of product.  I'm offering my opinion as geniune advice, as a user and a professional.  I'll leave it at that, and wish Astaro the best of luck with their business.  It otherwise seems a great product.

    I just bought some audio and computer equipment at the Circuit City closeout sales.  Depending on the item, I received anywhere from a 40 - 70% discount.  I thought I did pretty well.

    But unfortunately I have realized that I didn't get everything I would have liked to at their sale.  Damn.  You know, I could buy the other gear I need, and even though I can afford it (check out all the gear I already have) I don't want to pay.  And why should I.  I received huge discounts on the other equipment.  It's just so wrong and unfair.

    Do you think maybe if I promise Sony and HP, and that *new* company that's just building their brand, that I'll recommend them to everyone I know, then they'll give me what I need for free.  How fortunate they'll be to have me on their side.

    Yes, I know they're worried about business users taking advantage (come on, a business, try to take advantage, perish the thought!).  That won't happen; and even if it does, as long as I get mine (and I'm far more important than paying customers) - well, let's just say stuff happens, right.

    So that's my plan.  And  watch out.  If they don't play ball and give me my better deal - I won't recommend them to anyone (even though their products are really good).  That'll prove how unfair they are.

    This is gonna be great!

    Oh, one more thing.  I expect Sony and HP and that *new* company that's just building their brand, will be giving away free patent rights to those who don't want to or "can't" (hint, hint) afford it.  And since we "can't" afford it - the patent holders won't be losing any money.  So no problem, right?

    What you say is true.  This has also been discussed previously.  I understand where you are coming from and we've considered this in our business too.

    From my personal experience, both with Astaro and my own company, too many people do take advantage and are all too happy to switch to another product should a better deal come along.  Loyalty to a employer, let alone a supplier is hard to come by these days.

    Given Astaro DO offer larger IP licenses for enthusiasts who contribute to beta testing I think they do offer an out for those who enjoy and champion the product to get a bigger license.  So they're sort of saying, "No we won't give out a bigger license for nothing, however if you help us out we'll come to the party as well".

    There's no real right or wrong to this.  I'm just happy they are the company that they are.

    I agree.  There's no right or wrong - just opinions (and in reading other posts, the odd childish flame, but hey, we can't all be grown ups!)

    I do question the validity of restricting by IP address.  As has been stated, NAT gets around this.  Much more sensible is restricting sessions, which Astaro quite rightly does.  If IP address restrictions can be got around so easily, why bother?  It just frustrates legitimate users rather than prevents use by illegitimate users.  Just my opinion...

    Powderhound, why don't you start a thread like "Tricks to fit the right stuff behind my home-use license" or something like that.  Maybe we could get some good stuff that would facilitate Astaro offering a How-to along with the home-use license.

    If you're seeing some IPs that are no longer active, maybe you can try a trick I thought of but don't have a way to try.  Set the time forward a week, and see if they disappear, then set it back and see if they're still gone.

    Instead of IPs, if Astaro were to limit to three concurrent http proxy sessions, that wouldn't be enough for many people.  I don't know how you easily could regulate the SMTP or POP3 proxy.  It may be just too complicated to try to do it any other way than by IP count.

    A reseller can create a trial license for up-to 90 days for any size of company, so Astaro does have a way to work flexibly with potential buyers.

    I like the idea, but I'm not sure I should encourage (or teach) people how to circumvent the IP restriction any more than what has already been posted on the forum.  I would rather Astaro identifies that IP restriction is an outdated and inappropriate method to achieve their goal (whether or not the goal is valid is another discussion, but ultimately up to Astaro's marketing team).  I think I've said enough about that, so I'll zip it.

    If someone from Astaro wants to give me the green light to discuss how personal users could/should work around the 10-IP limit, then I'd be happy to.

    I'll try the clock method as you suggest.  A further suggestion to Astaro is that an unlimited (or high limited) license is granted for the first week or so (a month would be good).  In implementing the ASG, users need to reconfigure their network and I think for many people, as I have experienced, all this IP reconfiguration results in duplicate/unnecessary IP's being counted in the short term.  It would be good to have a grace period to perform the implementation unhindered, IMHO.

    I forgot to mention... As far as sessions go, I believe there is already a limit of 1000 concurrent, but I could be wrong.

    Measuring this in Linux is pretty easy.  Do a "netstat -a" and you'll see all currently open sessions.  I believe that this is a better way to measure usage.  eg.  my phone company bills me for the calls, not how many phones I have in the house...

    That's exactly what I meant to suggest.  I don't think there's a spot where a new home-user can find the information needed to create a good plan and what the trade-offs are.
