I too had been thinking about purchasing a 50 user license for home use since I'm sure the 10 user license (or even the 25 user license for beta testing whenever that gets here) won't be enough considering all the things that use the net these days (phones, ipods, desktops, laptops, tivo, xbox, playstation, gameboy, etc, etc,). 

I was wondering how much it would cost so I checked it out on the Astaroguard.com website you mentioned.  Do I have this price correct???? 

Astaro Security Gateway software 50 User is $1095 plus I need to purchase an anual maintenance contract for an additional $395 for a whopping total of $1490???  And that doesn't even include the hardware to run it on???

Am I missing something?  If that's the cost I certainly can't afford that.  Or am I not calculating something right.

You have the correct calculation for the software.  You left out subscriptions for Web Security and/or Mail Security, so the real annual cost is quite a bit more than $395.

These prices may seem high to you, but they are actually less expensive than competitors that Astaro outperforms in industry evaluations.

I understand that it may be a good deal for business users. I'm just looking for a solution that will work for my home network.  It seems the current licensing model that Astaro uses won't work for home users anymore.  I certainly can't afford to pay that much as a non-business user.  I had just heard a lot about astaro on various podcasts and thought it might be interesting to give it a try.

Astaro just completed beta testing of the new V7.4; the people who actively participated in that and reported bugs are to receive 25-user home licenses for their efforts.  I don't think they've done that before, but this was a major upgrade.  You might keep an eye on the User BB for future beta-test opportunities.

Also, it might be possible to arrange your network so that only the PCs and printers are behind the Astaro.  I doubt that Astaro is looking for exploits of the Wii or home DVRs.  Even the Astaro VoIP Security does nothing to protect the phones; it only watches the traffic to keep unneeded ports closed in order to make the computers safer.  It might be easier than you imagine to make do with 10 IPs.

I am not a network engineer nor do I play one on TV so please enlighten me if there is a way to do this...  But if I have my Xbox's set up to stream music and video files from my server then all of them would have to be in the same network segment as my server which would prevent me from putting them outside of the purview of the Astaro correct?   

I was active in the beta test so I'm hoping to try the 25 user license and see if I can make that work.  Fingers crossed....

If you had another router (Linksys, whatever), and put it on your internet connection, and hooked the xbox, etc. to it, and then hooked the Astaro firewall to it the router, and put the PCs/servers behind Astaro...

For simplicity, call the Linksys network DMZ

1. Astaro PacketFilter rules allowing traffic from DMZ to LAN should work to let the consoles stream media from the firewall.

2. this would be 2 network segments, and as far as the firewall is concerned, the DMZ is EXTERNAL.

So, it should work.

This may even be within the spirit of the Astaro license, as the consoles are not 'protected' by the firewall.

As far as security, IF your console gets compromised somehow, then it could be used as a gateway into your LAN, but this is pretty unlikely to happen.

If you needed to access the internal PCs/server over the Internet, you'd need to NAT on the router, and/or use a VPN.
