Hardware Upgrade

The new 7.400 update software issues aside, I'm seeing a warning in my Up2Date overview about memory use:

The average RAM usage of your system during the last 7 days was over 70%.
The upcoming V7.4 and subsequent releases include many more features. To ensure your system continues to run optimally with these releases, it is recommended that you either increase the system's RAM size or upgrade to a unit with more memory before applying the next Up2Date package.
Please contact your certified Astaro partner to obtain detailed information about available upgrade programs.


I have an ASG110 (512MB default/standard config); I don't believe it is upgradeable (at least, maybe not without voiding the warranty), so it appears that I'm looking at a new device if I can't figure out what is consuming RAM without giving me value. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that. I'm sure that features I have enabled are causing me this pain; I haven't found any documentation for calculating the resource utilization versus feature-sets.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Even providing some linux console suggestions for researching processes vs working set would be helpful.

    Jim, your reseller is the right place to ask these questions.  Depending on when you bought the unit, it might be upgradable.  If it is, then your reseller can sell you an Astaro memory upgrade for $100 that won't void your support.  If it's one of the very first units, then it is not upgradable.

    PS The first place to look to decrease the load is in Intrusion Protection.  Turn off checking for things you don't have.

    Also, in the HTTP proxy, you can set anti-virus to single scan.  One would need to see a picture of CPU usage over the last week to guess whether you are over-loading the ASG.

    It's about 4 months old--I just exited the warranty period.

    It's not the CPU; it barely rises above single digits. I had always assumed that the high memory utilization was caching, not services, but the warning has made me take another look.

    We chose not to get the smaller unit, the ASG110 to avoid any potential hardware limitations for a small to medium remote site.

    Not to muddy the waters, but my research indicated that the only difference between the 110 and 120 was in the licensing, not the hardware. Unless you had more than 10 hosts regularly connected, you should have been able to confidently choose the 110 and have no more hardware limitations than with the 120.

    The memory upgrade is a good idea for everyone, I think.

    My reseller included a the response from Astaro about my inquiry; she indicated that the RAM upgrade is recommended for any ASG that's running above 70% (hence the built-in recommendation), but that a system that isn't similarly taxed would be just fine after the 7.40 update.

    Now I wish I would be able to upgrade to 2GB instead of 1GB, just because I'm greedy!

    I have a question about 7.400 and the hardware upgrades.  We have (2) ASG 220's which are the first revision.  They are about 2 1/2 years old.  We are considering upgrading to the new 220's which have much improved hardware.  I was wondering if we could use a Personal Home license on the old 220's when they are removed from service.  From what I understand, Astaro will blacklist them so the full unlimited license can't be used anymore.

    JimD, My recollection from these forums is that you can re-install using the software ISO (NOT the appliance ISO), and the home license should work.
    The only caveat is the interfaces may not be in the labeled order, and I'm not sure if the LCD would work.

    I tried installing the ASG software ISO on a 220 and it did not work.  I hooked up a monitor and keyboard and went through the installation.  After it did the hardware detection phase, the next screen said "installing non-ASG on ASG hardware" or something like that.  This was with version 7.304.  Has anyone else tried this and gotten it to work?  I've seen other posts in the forum saying you can do that, but it isn't working for me.

    boot it up with a disk partition tool (gparted works good... see gparted.sourceforge.net) and delete all partitions on the hard disk; the software only version will install fine after that.  Note that the ethernet ports on the front of the appliance will be detected "out of order"... so port 3 or 4 is really eth0, etc.  Other than that, it will work fine.  There is a way to remap the ports, but I wouldn't bother if you can just stick stickers on it to show what port is which.

    Thanks BrucekConvergent!  That worked!

    Here's a little hint if someone else wants to try this.  You can just boot up the software appliance image, and after the screen where it says to press F8, you can press Alt-F2 to get to a bash prompt.  From there you type 'fdisk /dev/hdc' (it was hdc for me on an old 220 - YMMV) and then delete the partitions.  After you press 'w' to write the partitions to the HD, press Alt-F1 to get back to the installation program.

    I think I installed V7.400 on an ASG220v1 last month without any such difficulties... but, I've slept since then.
