Wireless Inet using USB stick with SIMcard

Hi there!
I'm a newbie using Astaro Security Gateway V7 which was installed by an colleague who left the company. At the moment I'm thinking about changing our DSL provider - this will affect some firewall settings. 

First of all my goal is to setup a kind of backup connection so that the internet will be available for the internal LAN even in case the DSL goes offline.  My idea is to connect a new USB device to the ASG. On the market there are USB sticks available with SIM-cards so that the connected computer will be online using a GSM connection like a cell phone. 
This should be only a temporary solution in case of emergency, so it has to be preconfigured and manually turned on when needed. 

My question is: 
Does anybody know if the ASG7 can be configured for this kind of device? I suppose the USB-stick has to be connected directly to the astaro computer... thus I'd need to find a cell phone provider who offers appropriate linux drivers. 
Did somebody realize something like that before or is it a completely stupid idea?

    One of the things that V7.400 adds to V7 is the ability to do WAN link balancing, so a solution with both connections being pre-configured but one not turned on is possible.

    If you have an Astaro appliance, I don't think there's a way to use the USB ports that way without voiding your support.   The GSM connection in the US only does about 120kb, and that's not much different than being totally disconnected for an office of any size.

    My guess is that your best solution would be to keep the existing DSL provider and add a second one.  That would give you additional bandwidth and reduce the possibility that your company could lose connectivity.

    thanks for your response! 

    That WAN link balancing sounds good, but unfortunately there's no way to keep two DSL providers. That has already been decided by other dept. 
    So it will be one DSL connection and maybe an ISDN modem if the cell phone idea doesn't work.

    We are using the Astaro Security Gateway installed on a Dell server so it shouldn't be a problem using the USB port as it is not the Astaro appliance. (Or is there maybe also a security restriction within the Linux OS for the use of USB ports??)

    Regarding to the speed - I'm located in Switzerland and I've seen mobile providers who advertise GPRS/UMTS/HSDPA connections with 7MBit/s (HSDPA) in best case. (I'm aware that the maximum speed will not be reached, but I still think 3~5MBit/s might be enough for 2 or 3 days...)

    I've never tried to use a USB device with Astaro.  I've seen clients with internet delivered through a wireless modem with an ethernet port, so I'm sure you can find that there, too.

    Astaro doesn't support any USB devices for networking.

    thanks for the note about USB and networking with Astaro! That's what I needed to know. Thus I'll look for a different solution.

    Kyocera makes some reasonably priced routers (under $300 USD) which support an EVDO (Sprint) USB Aircard, and output Ethernet and WiFi (G).
    However, our experience with them is that the cellular connection doesn't stay up for very long before the router has to be reset (it's good for a few hours though, if you have a decent cell connection).
    Maybe a firmware update would help (I haven't tried, as we only use it in emergencies).

    Anyways, you should be able to plug the ethernet output of the Kyocera into an EXT NIC in Astaro, and you can configure failover routing.
    I don't know how you'd get the aircard to restart automatically if it goes down though.
