Please bring back BitTorrent Downloads of ISOs...

We removed the bittorent option since it was vastly underutilized for the 6 month period we trialed for. Perhaps it is time to relook at that option again. I do however want to let you know we plan to significantly extend our up2date and server distribution of packages, have many improvements coming that will be directly visible to the end user (you).

In the meantime, to avoid browser related download troubles, feel free to just anonymously connect to our ftp servers directly with an ftp client, which will give you some more peace of mind/resume abilities as well.

I have been trying to get the 7.400 SSI image since it came out, and ftp.astaro.de gives me a whopping 3.7KBps... 37 hours to download, no thanks. The other two servers haven't had it show up yet.

Agreed, which is why we work on a solution to this. Having 50,000 people all needing 200mb-700mb in a short period of time is a good problem to solve for sure...

My download was chugging along at around 6k with download client but then i luckily found the iso also on Index of /Astaro_Security_Gateway/v7/software_appliance/iso and my download manager lets me use mirrors simultaneously so that helped tremendously for this download.

Well, it surely wasn't because of me! [;)] I've always tried to use BitTorrent and leave my client running typically 24/7.

It seems that it wouldn't take much effort to set up a primary seed and run a client on each of your mirrors.  It would be nice if there were some software to automate this (I'll have to look into it later).

I've never had good luck with FTP and resume - it seems to result in a corrupt file half the time.  At least BitTorrent has built in integrity checking which makes it much more reliable.  Rsync would be an option as well.

Exactly - only one mirror has the latest content which is a big issue.  Staging the files on each mirror in a protected folder and moving them to the correct place later would help keep the mirrors in sync.  Whatever you do now, does not work well.

Me too.  It's so slow that I haven't even bothered yet once I realize how long it's going to take.

Would it be practical to make each Astaro a BitTorent client in a network limited to Astaros?  You could allow each admin to opt-in or opt-out of the Astaro Up2Date BitTorrent network.  Couldn't you measure the throughput of the External uplink and limit serving to 10% of available bandwidth or another amount chosen by the admin?

It just seems like the development costs would be a lot less than continuing to pay for hosting and bandwidth.  It would be more reliable, too.

Anyway, just some thoughts in support of drees' suggestion.

A lot of users may not be comfortable with that, but it's all in the marketing, perhaps.

Jep, I won't pay for distribution traffic which is a basic must for astaro.

What about getting some prioritization to up2date packages in first place?
As I have an open case regarding delayed distribution of virus updates I would set these on top of my list.

Incredible, if you are using the virus scanner from the vendor directly you get the pattern just in time. -and you don't have to worry about new virus threats...

If you use the same scanner engine on your box then you have to wait for the update as it depends on the up2date infrastructure. If Astaro can't handle this I would recommend to use the server infrastructure from the vendor of the virus scanner and add an option to update the pattern using different methods configurable in WebAdmin.

I'm happy to upload ISO's and patches via my Astaro.

We don't pay for traffic.  Make it an option then if this is implemented.  Suggest also, all OFF by default as a lot of people do pay for traffic.
I guess security could be an issue as well if someone managed to hack in a malware up2date.

I'm fairly confident in saying that we probably won't be asking your units to distribute our patches, while the offer from some of you is appreciated [:)] It simply would cause too many security concerns or potential negative situations, opt-in or not. Rest assured we do have plans for a lightening-fast distribution scheme, which you will see in the coming months and all the existing slowness/delays etc.. will be solved. We are on this!
