FiOS only gives me 4MB down with Astaro

Been running fine with Comcast cable for years.
Upgraded to Verzion FIOS 20 down 5 up.
I can get out the the Internet fine, but when I run a speed test, it says I only get around 4MB down and 1MB up.
When I replace the Astaro box with a Sonicwall TZ 170, I can get 20MB down and 5MB up.

The CPU typically sits about 30% under normal to heavy load. Mem usage is less than 50% under normal load (swap usage is typically 0%)

Hardware specs:
Intel Pentium 4 2.0 GHz
1 GB RAM
3 nics - all Netgear GA 311 GB
40 GB hard drive (IDE)

Seems to me a NIC issue, but how can I tell for sure? Is there a different NIC I can install that will definitely give me the bandwidth? I don't want to keep buying NICs just to "try and see" if possible. And using the Sonicwall permanently is not an option.

    BruceK or BarryG have suggested here that that someone in your situation check the MTU of the External nic, and that you might try half-duplex and/or fixed speed instead of auto-negotiate.

    You might check to see if your nics are on the V7 Hardware Compatibility List

    I'll have to check the MTU, but I know I've seen other threads (dslreports) about it, and changing it didn't do anything.

    The hardware is not on the HCL, but I know Astaro sees it correctly as a GB NIC. Perhaps I just need to try a compatible tested NIC?

    I'll try your other suggestions, thanks.

    Anyone else using a different NIC that is getting the correct speeds?

    A couple of questions / things to try:

    1) Is the IPS enabled?  If so, this could result in a bit slower response; that Sonicwall does not have a full featured IPS as the Astaro does.  Try disabling the IPS and testing to see if there's a difference.

    2) Are you using the HTTP proxy for these speed tests (either transparent or "standard" mode)?  Proxies do mess with the numbers presented by Flash and Java based speed tests.  In addition, if you have AV scanning, etc. enabled in the proxy, that will slow things down a bit.

    Bruce, do you know of a speed test that gives the correct information with the Astaro?

    I usually use the speed tests on DSLReports.com, fwiw.

    Note that you usually have to try a couple servers, as sometimes internet congestion affects the results.

    I was using speedtest.net, using the same server as a comparison. After several runs with the Astaro versus the Sonicwall, it was evident the difference was the hardware and not something out of my control.

    I am using Intel PRO/100 S Dual Port Server Adapter on my Shuttle K45. Had problems with the onboard NIC and disabled. Processor is Intel e5200. Have the same FIOS service as you and get full bandwidth through Astaro.

    FWIW, an e5200 is MUCH faster than a 2GHz P4.

    Same processor with onboard nic spiked at 100% cpu. Intel NIC dropped cpu to near 5% at full bandwidth.
