Install ASG 7 on a laptop?

PCMCIA NICs are not supported well (if at all) on ASG 7 ... if you really, really, really wanted to install it on a laptop, you could install the VM version of ASG on VMWare Server on top of whatever OS you wish to load on the laptop.  I do demos, etc. of the product this way all the time.

Bruce, Is there a VM server one needs to buy to do that?  Or, is the necessary software already built in to the VM image?

Two answer the three questions.... to run on VMWare, first either buy VMWare Workstation, VMWare ESX Server (totally standalone version, will overwrite your laptop's HD--this may or may not work depending on what's supported on the laptop... I wouldn't try ESX server to be honest), or download the *free* VMWare Server package (see Free VMware Server Download for Server Consolidation - VMware)  from VMWare (this will run on top of your existing OS, Windows, Linux).

Then, download the prebuilt VMWare image of ASG from Index of /ASG/v7/virtual_appliance ... the ESX zip is for ESX Server, the other one is for VMWare Server.  Follow the instructions as included in the Astaro zip file, and it should work fine.  You may also need to review the VMWare Server (or ESX Server) documentation to understand the fine points of creating the proper interfaces, etc.

As to whether there is a performance hit... well, on a limited piece of equipment, like a laptop, sure, you will see some performance degradation using virtualization... but it works good enough to get familiar with it, or to demo it.  If installed on a VMWare server, a real server, the difference isn't really discernable with enough server "horsepower" driving it.

If you are looking at using the Astaro for home use, just get a regular old (nothing fancy) PC, slap 1GB of ram in it, at least 2 NICs, and use the standard ISO to install.

Oh, and USB NICs... I'd skip that too...
