Speed issue

Ok, so I´m having this problem with limited throughput when pulling files from one network to another. I´m only getting about 3,5MB/s when going through astaro.

This is the setup:

Astaro 7.3

Dual p3 700MHz
512MB RAM
3 NIC

Subnet 1: eth0 [Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+]
Subnet 2: eth2 [Intel Corporation 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro 100]

I am not using Qos, cpu is usually not more than 25-30% and I´ve tried different manual modes on the nics and autonegotiation is the fastest.

Could someone please give me a hint about why I´m not getting the 8-10MB/s of throughput that I am gettting when moving files between computers on the same subnet.

    The IPS uses a lot of CPU on a PIII;
    Try temporarily turning off the IPS, or adding an exclusion for appropriate networks.
    You may need to do similar for P2P and IM protection, if you're using them.

    You were spot on about the IPS beeing the culprit. I tried turning it off and network speed hit about 10.5MB/s. However I do have a followup question.

    Why is it that the cpu utilization is no more than 25-30% while having IPS turned on and it still throttles down my transfer rate? Shouldn´t I be seeing the cpu hit 100% before transfer speeds take a hit?

    Since you have dual CPUs, a single process such as Snort would use a max of 50% of the total CPU time.

    Are you getting the CPU utilization from the Dashboard, or from running 'top' on the shell?
    top would be more accurate, and you can hit the '1' key to see both CPUs.

    Thanks man, I didn´t think of the dual cpu issue. Sure enough, when looking in top snort was utilizing one of the cpus to its´ fullest extent. So now I´ll be thinking of upgrading my cpus. I believe I have some 1,4GHz P3s around here somewhere and I hope they will do the trick.
