My first and definitely the dumbest of the two I apologize in advance for this one.  I have the 2 lan cards as recommended... one for the WAN side and one for the LAN side.  The lan works fine... I have setup a DHCP server and everything and the LAN works great.  The issue is I can't get the internet to work... as in the card doesn't get an ip from my modem.  My setup is Modem-- Astaro Box-- Switch--  Computers


My second question is, can I change the lease time for how long the ip's are leased on the DHCP Server?

    Cable or DSL modem?

    If DSL, does it use PPPoE?

    Does your ISP lock your modem to a MAC address?

    re Lease Time:
    Assuming you're talking about the internal network...
    If you don't mind "voiding your warranty", you can edit the dhcp server config file in
    /var/sec/chroot-dhcps/etc/dhcpd.conf-default
    and then restart the dhcp server or reboot.

    Cable and yes they lock it to a mac address... but I have a dynamic ip.  

    As for the DHCP thanks I am assuming I have to edit the files via a live cd?  (boot from it and then use that to edit it?)

    You can edit the files by logging into the console as root, or using SSH (you can enable SSH and set passwords in the Management section).

    If it's locked to a MAC, did you give them the MAC of your external Astaro interface?

    Thanks I'll work on the editing.

    As for the wan issue.... I am still using my modem and I have it plugged into my astaro comp, so its not like I have changed the mac address on my ISP side

    The modem and ISP see the MAC of your external Astaro interface, or whatever else you'd plug the modem into.

    Please don't take this the wrong way... I am not trying to argue with you... rather further understand this.

    My old system used to go Street Cable---> Cable Modem ---> Netgear Router ---> My Computer

    I could use any router, I used to switch to a linksys once in a while and never had to tell the cable company.  The only time I have to tell comcast is when I am switching modems and then I just have to give them the mac address of the new modem.

    My new setup looks like this-

    My old system used to go Street Cable---> Cable Modem ---> Astaro Box ---> My Computer

    Basically this software acts like a complicated router with many more functions.  And I have it in the same location of my old router, so why do I have to tell my ISP?  And what are they going to do?



    **Again I am not trying to be a pain I am just really confused**

    OK... lets start over...

    Is Astaro getting an IP on the external interface, and is the status showing "Up"?

    If so, then you need to setup Masquerading in the NAT section, and create PacketFilter rules to allow traffic out.
    Alternatively, you can setup the proxies for HTTP traffic, etc.

    Also, how is your External interface configured?  I would set it to "Ethernet standard" with your currently-allocated IP.  That lets you eliminate one possible source of issues.

    Let me mess around with a few settings and get back to you tomorrow.  I'm going to disable all of the filters etc. that I have setup to make sure its not anything like that.  

    I will get back to you tomorrow on that and try the advice both of you have given me... thanks again
