N00b can't get to web interface

If you run ifconfig from the root login you can confirm the IP addresses active on the ASG, then you will need to assign the corresponding VMware interface an address in that range.  Note that changes made to IP addressing via ifconfig may not be persistent.

Once the VM adapter and the ASG are on the same subnet, try getting to the web interface on port 4444 at the address displayed by ifconfig.  If it doesn't work, try pinging back and forth between the IPs.

Also, I would recommend not playing with 7.201, that is a bit old now and a lot of updates have been made since then.  If you are new to Astaro and are just learning about it I would recommend trying the 7.4 beta, then you will be able to see and use the new features included in hte upcoming release.

Thanks for the fast response. I'm on windoze, so I'm limited to ipconfig rather than the Linux IFconfig.

For what it's worth, the two VMware net connections were at 192.168.21.1 and 192.168.42.1, immediately after re-installing VM reader, and they were unchanged after Astaro had loaded. I tried pinging 192.168.x.100 where x could be 21 or 42, but again, nothing. 

I tried to interrupt the Astaro setup, but was unable to do that, apart from at the GRUB loader menu. Once the login prompt appears in the Astaro window, there's nothing one can do to check the settings. 

I guess I could set up another VM running Ubuntu (with which I'm reasonably familiar), but there's nothing to say that would configure eth0 in the same way as your software. 

I've done a lot more fiddling with my own network IP range and the net masks and also with the NICs, but still can't get anything out of this. 

What does the 192.168.0.1 address mean, just above the Astaro login prompt? Is that significant?

I don't get why the default settings don't work. The setup is not unusual, and Most of it has been left for automatic (in windoze) setup.

The only thing I can think is that the router (Netgear 834) is affecting the local network and preventing Astaro from using its preferred addresses.

I've tried changing the subnet settings on that, and using DHCP to assign specific addresses to the other devices on the network, but, well, that's probably enough of my problems.

Dave... I've seen instances where the ASG image for VMWare displays an incorrect host address that does not match what it was set to in reality (it threw me off once too).  The address on an "out of the box" VMWare Server image (one that was downloaded from Astaro prebuilt, not something you created) is 192.168.150.5, as you have read.  You will need to configure VMWare Server properly... the first NIC in the predefined machine needs to be bound to an interface that supports the 192.168.150.0 subnet (bridged), or you will need to assign it to a NAT or Host Acess Virtual NIC, properly configured for the 192.168.150.0 subnet.  It sounds like you just need to revisit your VMWare Server config.

I meant run ifconfig from the root shell of the ASG VM, that will let you see how it is configured, and make changes of needed (you will need to remember to down/up the interface if you make changes).

Success! sort of.

I'm into the web interface, though there are still a few problems.

I guess I can sort those out as I work out how to drive this thing.

Essentially I loaded up ASG 7.305 which came up with the web address of 192.168.150.1, so I knew which addresses to use.

Then in the midst of playing with the various settings, I used windows to disable the NIC associated with the 192.168.150.x subnet, and suddenly the ping to 192.168.150.5 worked, which meant the web interface also worked.

I can use the web interface on the local machine. However, none of the other machines on the network can see the 192.168.150.x subnet. Which means ASG can't control them. 

I'm pretty sure I just have to adjust the network settings in ASG and balance them with the router settings. 

So it was (as I suspect you guys knew) just my own lack of competence at network management rather than any deficiency in the product. Except, perhaps the documentation....

OK, so my existing network is on 192.168.0.x, while the Astaro system is on 192.168.150.x by default. 

I can't get the two subnets to talk to each other. 

I bought a new network box (a netgear 834-based product which combines ADSL modem, router, DHCP unit), and set it up on the VMware host on the 192.168.150.x subnet. I used the Netgear utilities to handle PPoA but not DHCP on 192.168.150.x.

The aim was to get the system working using PPoA and network settings on the Netgear products (with which I am very familar) before migrating the settings back onto Astaro, (with which I am completely unfamiliar).

I aimed to use my old (also netgear) network box with the original DHCP and 802.11x settings to handle the local network on 192.168.0.x. I disabled the ADSL portion of that.

The aim was to have the Old netgear box hande DHCP on the internal (-.-.0.x) network, and then pass all traffic through the Astaro system, using it as a fancy transparent filtering proxy before going out to the new router via -.-.150.x and from there on to the internet. 

The result was that none of the machines on the 192.168.0.x subnet could ping the 192.168.150.x subnet (The error messges in windows told me that old netgear box controlling the DHCP was not permitting access to the -.-.150.x subnet). Which seems to mean that no traffic was passing to the Astaro unit.

So here's the first question. 

The internal network on Astaro is set by default to -.-.150.x. My homenet is on -.-.0.x. Do I need to convert my homenet to -.-.150.x, or move Astaro to -.-.0.x, or neither?.

Second. I tried to read the chapter on network bridging in the manual. It was not as clear as it could have been.

So what needs to be bridged? 

I'm using a virtual machine under windows, so windows tells me I have four network connections. VMnet1; VMnet8; SIS and Realtek.

(SIS and realtek are the PCI network cards)

I've used Windows network connections to set VMnet8 and SIS onto the -.-.150.x subnet and VMnet1 and Realtek onto the -.-.0.x subnet. 

I also tried various combinations of using VMware bridging protocol, but none seems or work. 

Then I tried using windows to bridge the SIS and Realtek connections. 
Anyway, here's the second question.

I feel like an idiot for not getting this, and yes I have RTFM, but it does not make this clear. I spent all day today trying to get the settings right. 

I tell you, if you can help me to get this fixed, I'll write a complete, comprehensive n00b guide to getting it working. I can't beleive it's so difficult....
