ASG Update procedure?

What IS wrong with this damned forum anyway?  This is the second time I have had this problem - create a posting and have it disappear instead of being posted.

Can anyone direct me to a document that outlines the procedure for re-installing the ASG firmware (for upgrade purposes)?

Some support guy suggested that upgrading from 7.2 to 7.3+ is best done by backing up the configuration, reinstalling the firmware from an ISO image, and then restoring the configuration.  Something to do with a long data conversion time or something.

I figure there's probably more to it: maybe some gotchas when restoring the configuration (minor incompatibilities between the before and after fw); maybe some issues with getting the license on; and how do you get the new ISO image onto the appliace anyway?

Here's hoping the posting makes it past the "Post" button this time...

    Hi Rob,

    Haven't seen any gotchas on restoring a backup file into a 7.3x system yet.  Here is a writeup on process I've used before for upgrading asg units:

    1)  Management>>Backup/restore and create a new backup file

    2)  Download the backup file to your laptop or admin pc.  Good option here to save time is to then copy your backup file to a standard USB flash drive in its root directory for restore later.

    3)  Download and burn to ISO (Be sure to burn as a bootable image, not a data disk) either the software image or the ASG appliance image from:
    Software: 
    ftp://ftp.astaro.de/pub/ASG/v7/software_appliance/iso/latest_asg_v7_software.iso

    Hardware (ASG 120, 220, 320, 425, 525):
    ftp://ftp.astaro.de/pub/ASG/v7/hardware_appliance/iso/ssi-7.304-081023-1.iso

    4) If using ASG appliance use a USB CD-rom and connect to the ASG USB port.  Power on your ASG.  If using software just insert into your CD drive.

    5)  CD will load and when complete will eject the CD
      5a) You may want to get a coffee or grab a snack as this will take about 30mins

    6)  Power off your ASG and insert the flash drive with your backup file.

    7) Power on and backup file will load.

    8) Login to webadmin and restore your network cables.   Upgrade should now be complete

    Exactly what I was looking for - the Astaro folks should keep something like this in the KB:  betcha it would make their Top Ten list.

    Reason I mentioned gotchas was because I watched an upgrade from 6x to 7x, and the configuration didn't come over cleanly.  There were lots of duplicate Definitions, etc. that had to be cleaned up.

    Sure appreciate the effort in putting this together - it will be very helpful for both my software appliance here at home, and a 220 at a client site.

    Carried out the upgrade of my software router using your steps.

    Worked fine except for a dodgy CDROM drive, which was easily replaced.

    Also the auto restore of the backup by rebooting with the USB key plugged in didn't work (maybe that's for hardware devices only?).  However, it restored using the Backup/Restore screen without issue.

    Altogether, the entire job took about an hour.

    Glad to hear those steps helped out.  The USB restore may indeed be only for the appliances or mobo that uses same USB drivers as the appliances for driver support.
