Hardware: on the cheap?

Howdy all:

I was wondering who has come up with a cheap hardware config?

In a nutshell I want to throw a box together for ASG that doesn't require server power =P (Power meter on my house is spinning fast enough)...

Has anyone set ASG up on any workstation platforms successfully? If so what did you use?

For home use, an old P4 with 512MB (or 768MB, 1GB) , 80GB SATA (or PATA) and two or three NICs works for those of us in our company that run a home license at home for testing, etc. ... I also have a few customers that run "recycled" workstations with similar specs at their home with a home license (they have a commercial install at the office) to keep the kiddies' web browsing in check.

I'm using a fast PIII; it's using 50-60 watts for the entire system, and it runs OK with PF and IPS. I was using a Celeron 500, but webmin was very slow, at least in previous versions. The 800 runs pretty well for home use. Make sure you run AT LEAST 384MB of RAM, much more if you use the http proxy/content filter.

There's several threads in these forums discussing the following Mini-ITX platforms:

VIA C7 or newer (as low as 20watts and up to 4 10/100 NICs for up to $400)

Intel Atom (~30 watts and under $100 for the motherboard+CPU, but only one supported NIC)

There are more Atom motherboards coming out, but MAKE SURE the NICs are supported in Astaro before buying!
So far, Intel is only selling the CPU with a desktop chipset, so the power isn't nearly as low as it could be.
