Network driver support

Dear Astaro,
There is a common and significant thread regarding the network driver support in Astaro, it is less than adequate. Reading through the forums it surprises me a network device like ASL fails as often as it does to properly detect the network cards. You really need to make a significant improvement in this area. I am really very unimpressed myself. I have acquired a Dell Power Edge R300 server to run ASL on. I have in the past run ASL on a number of Dell Power Edge servers and none have failed. Both the Intel and Broadcom network cards have all been detected succesfully. The Power Edge servers include PE1850, PE1950 and R200 servers. I have just tried an ASL v7.300 install on the R300 and it has simply reported no network cards. The onboard NICs are enabled in the BIOS. I am now beginning the process of trying to address this issue. Sure, I can go and buy a dual port NIC to insert into the machine but I lose the only slot available and essentially throw away the onboard NICs. I used the ALT-F4 selection to check what it was detecting and it got everything except the kitchen sink and the onboard network cards. The server is based on an Intel chipset and Broadcom NICs. If you cannot detect the Intel hardware you might as well pack up your bags and go home. What is Astaro going to do to improve this element of the software is what I would like to know? Why not have a process to at least allow an attempt to load a driver supplied by the manufacturer.

    I will attempt to answer some of your questions, some with questions for you to ponder.

    Have you checked the hardware compatibility list (HCL) to unsure your NICs are supported? Just because it is Intel doesn't make it good.

    I think you fail to grasp what the ASG is all about. The ASG is a secure device and allowing any tom, dick or harry's NIC driver in can compromise security and take control of the hardware away from the secure system. Further it makes support almost unworkable. While you might trust the person providing your driver how does the rest of the world know it is secure? Who will test how well it interfaces with the ASG hardened kernel. If Astaro test it and signoff on it then the driver is likely to be in the build.

    Good points, Ian.  I suspect that Peter's box uses a new chipset that required the writing of new drivers.  The Dell site brags that the "PowerEdge R300 introduces a new, advanced 1-socket chipset..."  The unit does certify Suse, so I'd guess the new drivers are already in the queue to be tested at Astaro.

    One issue with Dell hardware is that their specs are somewhat volatile, especially compared to other x86 server vendors.  NICs and other components can change from one build to the next of the "same" Dell servers, which can make it tricky to keep up with the needed drivers.

    No I do not miss the point. Thank you for your response but you are missing the point. ASL is a Linux based operating system first and a security device second. It is network based and therefore must work hard to be a network device. ASL software must support the hardware and Intel is about as big as it gets. Sure, not all Intel product is good. Last time I checked they were the dominant corporation for the supply of the components being used in ASL boxes and there is daylight to the nearest company. I might point out the moderator tread very carefully with his response. He actually disagrees with you because if he did agree with you he would have said as much. He put out a modest response saying "One issue with Dell hardware is that their specs are somewhat volatile, especially compared to other x86 server vendors. NICs and other components can change from one build to the next of the "same" Dell servers, which can make it tricky to keep up with the needed drivers". Stop th excuse making and get oin with it. By the way RFCat-vk I have been using ASL since V3 and I have seen it move considerably in the philosophy of security. Instead of saying I miss the point get behind the drive to increase hardware support. I am more in line with the position advocated by BAlfson, ASL is apprently based on SUSE and there is a Dell driver for it. Accelerate the process and get the driver out there. I am not interested in continuing the irrelevant discussion. I reiterate to Astaro, what are you doing to improve this?

    Peter, I agree it's frustrating.

    The truth is, Dell's manufacturing model really is different.  We sell about $10 million a year in HP gear, and have large accounts that have tried Dell, but were not satisfied with Dell's constant fiddling with components.  They kept having to re-invent their standard-load disks.

    If we had an office down under, I'd tell them to send a salesman over there to get your VP of Technology to move your new purchases from Dell to HP.  We love it when people have frustrations relative to Dell's stuff!  ;-)

    Other people have reported that the V7.302 ISO is buggy.  Are you sure you didn't grab that one?  I bet the new drivers will be here in the near-future, so you could temporize with adding a dual-port card.  It's always a good thing to have handy, so you could remove it in a few months.

     the drivers you are asking about are more than likely a couple of kernel releases ahead of where Astaro is in their in-house testing of the next release or the one after.

    You are not the first and won't be the last trying to get Astaro to move their kernel releases to a faster model.
    I tried a very late model motherboard and had to go and buy an earlier model because of exactly the same issue. If I want to use the first motherboard I have to wait until the software catches up which it does in most cases.

    We haven't had our HP server long enough to worry about software patches, but our IBMs have very specifically different drivers even between 2 supposedly identical boxes.

    Most moderators around this forum tread lightly, so I don't see Jack's response being to much different from any other moderator's answers.
