ASG-Software and Appliance ISO images for non ASG Hardware.

I do not work for Astaro, just another user.  Yes, Astaro can work quite nicely on third party hardware.  Please check the HCL for compatibility, especially with NICs (http://www.astaro.com/lists/HCL-ASG-V7.txt).  If you want a 3rd party LCD to work,you're going to have to do some serious hacking of Astaro yourself and will void any support agreement you may have.

As stated by myself and others on this forum recently (seems to be a popular question)... no, you cannot install the Astaro Appliance (ASG Series, ASG 110, 220, 320, etc.) image on anything but an Astaro Appliance.

You can load the Software image (AKA the Software Appliance image) on anything you like that meets the requirments of the Astaro HCL (see up2date.astaro.com).

The key differences in the Astaro Appliance image and the Software image are:

1) the Astaro Appliance image supports only ASG Appliance Licenses, The software appliance image supports User-based licensing
2) The Astaro Appliance image supports LCD Displays and keypads as built into all of the appliances (except the smaller 110  / 120 models), "out of the box."
3) the webadmin dashboard will display the model number and a bitmap image of the appliance it is installed on when the Astaro Appliance image is used.
4) On units with more than 4 ports (think the 220, 320, etc.) the ports will be allocated in the correct order (leftmost port will be eth0, with eth1 next to, so forth until the last port) if the unit has the Astaro Appliance image installed. If one installs the Software Appliance image on an appliance like the Astaro (and generic models), the ports are often out of order, as the MAC addresses of the ports are out of order.  I've encountered this when using recycled Astaro hardware for our internal testing lab (I'm a reseller, so I have a license for that).

As to the mechanism that allows the installs to determine whether they are being run on an Astaro Appliance or not; I know how they do it, but don't think it's a good idea to disclose that information.  Not only that, even if you DID install the Astaro Hardware Appliance image, where are you going to get a license for it?  The Home User license will not install on an ASG appliance...

There are probably a few other minute differences, but that's the majority of them.  The drivers for the LCD panel is present in the Software Image, but is disabled -- you would have to manually enable and configure them... and that could void your support.  As to the port order, the only real fix is to add a script in during boot that reorders the ports; again, doing so could void your support.  If you're a home hobbyist, etc. and are using a home license, sure, tinker away.

Oh, and I almost forgot; we do sell a lot of ASG Appliances, and we also sell about the same number of customers Software Licenses... there are some situations where the Software license makes more economic sense, and there are some where the Astaro Hardware Appliance is a better deal... we work with customers on determining that on a case by case basis.

My company sells non-Astaro Network Security Appliance with LCD Display(similar to ASG 220,320) and get Software License from Astaro local Reseller, coz whole lot of this solution is more economic to small and mid-size companies.

Astaro support covers ASG/ASL software as provided and maintained by Astaro.  While it is possible, we certainly do not go out of our way to search for modifications and disqualify customers for support. The bottom line is that if we observe modifications which may impact the system, we may require the system be re-imaged with an appropriate image before we can provide support.  For complete "fine print", please consult your Channel Manager or the My Astaro partner portal.

One often-overlooked factor in the appliance maintenance price is hardware support- with a supported ASG appliance both hardware and software issues are covered, and through a single support channel.

@BrucekConvergent    Bruce, in your post you seemed to indicate that it was possible to load the software image on a hardware appliance.  I'm trying to load the software image on an old 220, but I get an error that says I'm trying to load the non-ASG image on ASG hardware.  I'm using 7.304.

I have 2 old 220's that were upgraded as part of the 7.4 upgrade program.  I'd like to use a home license on them, if that is possible.
