Host Network Settings in VMWare Server

Make sure you are using the Astaro VMWare image... do not try to install the iso... go to http://download.astaro.com/Astaro_Virtual_Appliance/ASG/v7.0/ to get the .zip file with the latest VMWare image... there's a howto doc in the zip file as well that should explain everything.

Thanks!! I've downloaded VMware Image of ASG v7, but I'm confused with VMware Server virtual Ethernet settings. There is no wiki for ASG on VMware.

It's documented in the filed in the .zip file.  If you just want to add more ethernet interfaces, just add them using VMWare console; they'll show up in the Astaro Webadmin after you boot the VM.  It's pretty simple.

Sounds like you're a bit new to ESX/VMWare. No problem we can help.

What you need to do is either add a new (3rd) nic in your server or make sure your ESX/VMWare server is setup correctly. If you only have two network cards then your VMWare server may need to lock down and use one of those nics for itself. You can "share" that nic between the system and the vm's but you will need to make sure that it is either taken care of during your install or jump in and do some command line work. (this all assumes you're using ESX the flagship product) Don't use ESX? You can get FREE versions just like you can get a free version of ASG for home use. http://www.vmware.com 

ESXi works really well for building an ASG server off of. Its a Type 1 Hypervisor with a super small footprint. I believe around 35 mb. You can run it off a thumbdrive - no joke!

Anyway, once you have done the above make sure you then connect the physical nic that will be used for your WAN connection to the your bridge / router / modem etc. Then make sure your LAN card is hooked up to a switch/hub etc. Then if you added in a 3rd nic which I would suggest you do, add a line from that nic to the switch/hug. This will allow you to connect to your ESX appliance as well as your VMs via the network.

The thing to remember about ESX/VMWare is the system has built in virtual switches. This will allow you to do whatever kind of VLAN ***iness you need / want, including cutting your WAN traffic from your LAN (if you want)... VLANs inside of ESX are super easy to setup, maybe two or three mouse clicks!

Go with the three nics if you can.

What are the proper settings in VMWare Server for ASG v7.
I have 2 Nics with XP Pro running VMware Server

NIC 1- External Connected directly to ADSL Gateway Router IP: 192.168.1.254
NIC 2- Internal connected to a switch or the same ADSL Gateway Router IP: 192.168.150.50

Now before Starting Virtual Machine I can see only 1 Ethernet
Q: What settings should be used here Like Bridge, Host-Only etc?

Q: If I add 2nd Ethernet in vmware then to which physical Ethernet it should be connected?(Labeling as Ethernet1)

In Virtual Network Editor which Physical Ethernet cards to be bridged from VMnet0 to VMnet9

Jayson, I'm already running VMWare Server 1.06 and I have ASG v7 Image for VM. In VMware Server VMnet1 and VMnet8 are already assigned with DHCP IP addresses.Should I bridge my 2 Physical Ethernet Cards to these? 
I couldn't understand still when ASG in added in VMware Server Inventory It shows with 2 Ethernet cards, 256MB RAM. Which of these should be bridged with my physical cards? Which is eth0 and eth1? and what is VMnet0 and VMnet9?
1.I have tried first Ethernet card connecting to directly to Router as External.
2. Second Ethernet card connected to switch as Internal

Now before starting ASG i can see by default in Inventory
Ethernet: NAT
Ethernet 2: Host only

Physical Ethernet Cards
External
Internal
Now between these 4 cards which are to be bridged,NAT, Host only or Custom?
