Install and MS Virtual Server

Has anyone been able to get this to install on MS Virtual Server or PC... I am trying to evaluate the application/software, but can't get it to install.... I know I can download a version for VMware, but we don't use VMware at the office at all, and I don't have a spare box to but this on as it stands now!

Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks... I know, but if I don't use it at the office, what good is it for me to use in a test enviroment?

    Well, AFAIK, Astaro doesn't support running ASG in a VM on anything but VMWare Server or VMWare ESX...  I'd probably test with what's supported, so if you are going into a production environment with it, there will be no surprises.  VMWare Server, VMWare Player, as Barry said, are free downloads.  Only limitation with VMWare Server is it only support 4 virtual ethernet connections, but that should be enough for an eval (and most production) environments.

    Bruce is correct, the only supported virtualization platforms are from VMWare.  I have heard of users successfully installing on other virtual platforms, but the severely limited networking capabilities of many VMWare alternatives may prevent you from getting the most out of the system.

    I am using Astaro 7.200 with Hyper-V under Windows Server 2008 64-Bit. I's running very fast and stable. The only problems are automated startup and shutdown with the host, so i use the save-option from hyper-v and do a manual restart of the astaro some times. Time synchronisation, manually or with NTP, is a problem after restarting the host, too.

    Now my question: Microsoft offers the Linux Integration Components for Hyper-V, is there any chance in the future to add theese to an astaro VM? Would be very nice to run a good firewall on Windows-Servers or Blade systems without using VMware.

    On Windows Server 2003 i ran astaro on VMware server, but in this new environment on 2008 Server i had several problems with VMware server, so i tried hyper-v.

    The upcoming VMware Server 2 (RC1 available at the moment) will support Server 2008.

    But I'd also prefer Hyper-V as it is already included...

    After updating to 7.201 and 7.202 i had serveral problems with ASL running on Hyper-V (multiple Processor faults in the virtual machine, bad time synchronisation). Now i am back to VMware Server 2, and its running stable since three weeks. Because my home server is shutting down every night, the better handling with starting/stopping ASL and time synchronisation with VMware are an important plus for VMware. But in the future i will try ESXi, too.

    Hey Roger,

    do you use the Astaro Virtual Appliance or did you install ASG by youself?

    If the first is the case: did you upgrade the virtual machine hardware to Server 2.0 and/or the VMware tools?

    In the second case: how are the VMware tools are installed? 

    I ask you this because I'm not too experienced with linux [;)]

    Hi Bastian,

    i am using the Astaro VM 7.200 as published by Astaro with installed vmware tools. Startup of this machine was possible, as i remember i had to change the scsi controller to BusLogig type.

    The tools are not the newest ones, but i am not able to update them. Maybe with some hacking over shell-login its possible, but i will wait for newer official astaro versions.

    Beside of this open point VMware Server 2 is running fine until now

    Hopefully the VI Client will be fully supported in the GA version...
