Update 7.1.x to 7.2.x broke the box: wrong modules path

No idea, but if you need to get it running again quickly, you might want to install 7.2 from scratch and restore a backup.

I do vaguely recall some errors like that mentioned here before, but I don't remember any details.

First of all make a backup from your config. Then use the newest image from astaro-ftp: ftp://ftp.astaro.de/pub/ASG/v7/install/hardware_appliance/ to reinstall your box and restore your config-backup again. So you have a fresh-reinstalled system in approx. 20-30 minutes without any loss of configuration.

we had exactly the same problem that the kernel update in Up2Date Package V7.200 broke our Box. See errors from kernel.log in above post. We tried to go from 7.104 to 7.200 where we figured that NAT wasnt working because kernel modules could not be loaded. Trying to get the missing files from a still intact box did not work. In the end we had to install our ASG with 250 Users waiting for internet!!! Firewall/Internet downtime was 2 hours and 30 minutes vs the scheduled 5 minutes for that update. (Downloading ISOs from Astaro was very slow!) Thanks Astaro (again) - V7 .......

I figured it would screw up something. haha.
I'll re ISO it tomorrow.  and restore a backup.  I learned my lesson with V7 too many times to mention.  V4, V5, and V6 were so rock solid... I suggest most everyone turn off autofirmware download just to prevent accidently installing and update.. then manually backup the current config file before attempting any V7 firmware upgrade.  I expect to hear from someone saying mine worked fine.  SUPER DUPER.  I used to get really mad with the Astaro V7 updates messing up features that worked perfectly fine before the update.  Now I just laugh and say 'Figures'.  

We have over 95 V6 still in the field operating just fine.. will be a sad day when they all have to be updated.

Download the ISO for your ASL or ASG before you might possibly need it.  I swore I wouldn't update to 7.200 from 7.104. and it saved me lotta grief.  Figured 7.201 would be happy and fix 7.200 bugs.  Any votes on what you all think the MOST STABLE version of V7 is.  I'd love to know from all.  or someone may start a new Vote for your favorite Version of V7 thread.

Perfect Buddy.  Great advice.  Every 6 months or so its a good idea (In my experience) to re iso your Astaro and restore a config file.  usually runs much much better and more stable.  This assumes an Astaro config that changes or adds to a lot.  if you never change anything, I'd assume that's not needed.  I've seen too many times. backing up a config of a flakey appliance, then re ISO'ing it to the exact same version, and restoring the config fixed TONS of issues....Thanks

Can you give more details of this process? From what I can gather, you need to use a USB CDROM drive connected to the ASG and boot from it? Is it as simple as that, or are there more details? My ASG220 doesn't even have a monitor port, so I wouldn't be able to see and respond to on-screen questions. Is the process completely automated? Simply booting the ISO via USB is ALL that's required?

jkmichael, if you're using an Astaro appliance (the 110, 120, 220, 320, etc.)... you just download the "ssi" ISO from the ftp site, burn a CD.  Then you hook up a USB CDROM Drive (I think you have to use the rear USB ports on some models) with the CD in it, and power on the Appliance.  If the appliance model you have has a LCD display, it will display what phase of the install process it is in... when it's done, the unit will beep 3 or 5 times (or is it continuous, it's been a while since I've reloaded one... anyhow, you'll know).  Unhook the CDROM drive, power off, then back on, the ASG, and you now have a "factory-fresh" ASG.  When it boots (if you opt not to restore the config via the USB port during boot), it will startup with Webadmin listening on https://192.168.0.1:4444  ...

With that all said; I've only had to reload one ASG due to failure in all the years I've sold and maintained these; and that one was due to a failed hard drive.  I guess maybe I've just been lucky.  I have reloaded quite a few, though, after secure wiping a HD after an eval, so I can report the ISO install process is pretty painless.

Thanks for the additional info, that helps a lot. I see there is now a USB stick option that apparently formats a USB key to boot when inserted into an ASG. Any experience with that? Seems like it would be a bit simpler than the USB drive (when dealing with hooking up a drive to the ASG in a rack vs. simply sticking a USB key into it).

I think a bunch of people have had problems with the USB stick option; some sticks just won't work with it.  What I was talking about is that you can put an unencrypted backup of your ASG configuration on a USB stick, boot an ASG, and have that plugged in, and the unit will automatically import that configuration.  I've only ever loaded ASG units via CDROM.

FYIs,
Getting USB memory sticks to boot on any PC involves getting the partition and boot loader settings exactly right, and documentation for the bootable CD linux distros, etc., to get them onto USB sticks, has been very poor.

However, I had no problems with BackTrack3; it's USB boot install script took care of everything.

Perhaps that script could be hacked to work with Astaro.

Note though that ISO boots work differently than FAT. Most bootable distros use FAT if you're using a USB stick.
