Help needed - installation failling

Hi,

I've resolved my fair share of install issues over the years but this time i need help.

hardware:
P4 1.8 (SL5UK)
ASUS P4S333-M
512 DDR 400 (2X256 PC2700)
O/B SIS NIC + 3CPM PCI NIC
LG 52X CD
IBM DESKSTAR 40GB 7200

software:
ASG 7.2 ISO (all md5 passed)

problem:
Kernel panic. It happens at random times but sooner or later before the install completes it fails.

attempted solutions:
-tried different CPU, RAM, IDE cables, HDD, CDROM.
-tried settings to LBA (which has fixed allot of install problems for me in the past).
-Tried factory default BIOS.
-repeated install many times
-CPU remains under 40 Celsius in BIOS

None of these changes made a difference. Also, I can successfully install IPCOP as well as Debian and have it run dependably.

I'm at a loss and would REALLY like to have ASG running. [:S]

    since it not running anyway.

    take a knoppix cd fire it up and let it run memtest for a day or so. since you changed everything except the motherboard...

    not sure if the astaro iso also have a memtest at boot.

    Since my last post I've done two more things I hadn't thought of previously...

    -updated BIOS to 1007 (1008 exists but the file was corrupt, might re-try that)
    -cleaned the CD

    Neither helped but I did get more exit info:

    something about recursively fixing a fault. left it run for over an hour and nothing changed so I quit.

    Also, I got tons of "not readable" in the console mostly libs.

    I'll try the Knoppix memtest; that's makes sense.

    As to not waste any ones time I re-tried the BIOS revision 1008m beta 003 (latest) and it applied successfully.

    I'm currently re-running the install.

    OK here are some actual errors:

    "bad page state in process 'mkf.ext3'
    "trying to fix it up but reboot is required"
    "ignoring nobh option since filesystem blocksize doesn't match page size"

    And then it continues to install the rpm's but fails on each since it doesn't seem to be able to write to the filesystem.

    Since I tried a new drive & new cables am I looking at a IDE controller issue maybe?

    either that or your cd-rom/dvd drive isn't happy.

    But the thing is I installed IPCOP and Debian and they both ran just fine for hours. So how could it possibly be a hardware failure issue. It seems to me like Astaro doesn't like something and that it's more of a compatibility issue than anything else. I just need to find what it's not getting along with.

    i think that astaro uses the suse distribution. so try to (test) install a suse (not the latest one)  distribution and see what happens...

    for me it looks like a ide problem some where, bios setting / ide controller / ide hard drive  or cable. but since you already replaced most of those things...

    i bet on your motherboard -> astaro compatibility issue, not sure why...
