Ok I read that thread, and I didn't see where it explained how to factory reset a 120. Not as simple as a button that sets you back to defaults? No option to hold a reset, then power on the unit?

With the Astaro v7 it is possible to change the default runlevel at boot time.

To change the runlevel of a single boot session, use the following instructions:

* When the GRUB menu bypass screen appears at boot time, press the Esc key to enter the GRUB menu (within the first three seconds).
* Press the [e] key to append a the default boot entry.
* Navigate to the line starting with "kernel" and press the [e] key again to append the default kernel.
* Add at the end of the boot options line to boot to the desired runlevel. For example, to reset the Astaro you need to load into runlevel 4:

grub edit> ... vga=819 splash=silent 4

* Press Esc and  to boot the system

After an (automatic) reboot you can log in via the Webadmin on https://ip.you.defined.on.installation(:4444), set your passwords right and license again and start all over, or insert a working backup.

Example: (v6) https://192.168.0.1 or (v7) https://192.168.0.1:4444

Thanks for the information medic, can I access an Astaro 120/220 or other units with a null modem cable and Hyperterminal or something?

the 110/120 and the V2 Versions of 220 Appliance has a VGA Port.
On the V1 220 you can use the null modem cable and Hyperterminal.

Medic if you can help me out with the settings for that I would appreciate it very much. I can't find it in the admin manual, astaro's kb, or searches on the internet. Iv'e tried hyperterminal setting with com1 9600, , 8 none and 1, various flow control and auto detect on the terminal, vt100. Whats the trick here? Thanks!

According to a manual I've got laying around, the settings are:
Bits per second: 38400, Data bits: 8, Parity: N (none), Stop bits: 1.
(I think flow control can be turned off).

Hey.... you can also reset a 220 using the front panel buttons, there's a menu there... it's easier than messing with a terminal session.  The 110/120 units have a keyboard and VGA port, no serial console needed.

I setup the keyboard/video, works great. I was wondering if setting up a modem to dial in out-of-band to access the unit remotely was feasible. I tried the settings but didn't seem to work on the 120. 

I couldn't find those settings anywhere in my ASG V7 manual v7.002. I also downloaded 7.100 manual, couldn't find it there either. Thanks again, I really appreciate the help.

Anyhow, given that these are appliances, a quick support case with Astaro would probably get you going again (I'm sure they get the reset question all the time).

Thanks Bruce. I'd be happy if Astaro support would correct the current open issues I already have open. I am finding that Astaro support is extremely limited in their capability. I currently have 2 issues open. One is related to SSH not accessible, the other is DSL locking up the Astaros during failover. With the SSH issue, Astaro support modified the wrong Astaro, and sent me an email asking if it was fixed. I've repeadly replied with the correct Astaro IP address, and have yet to receive a phone call or email acknowledging that information. Instead I get the default email asking if I approve of the previous email.

My DSL issue is clearly an Astaro issue. I have 8 Astaro's locking up on DSL failover. 3 different ISP's, 8 different sites, and Astaro support is asking me to change ISP settings from PPPoe to Ethernet standard for testing. I'm stunned to find that Astaro support, or the engineer deptartment doesn't have their own testing lab? 

Basically I wouldn't waste my time with Astaro support for something that should be as basic as wiping a system to defaults, when they can't solve what I currently have open. Even our past support requests go unresolved, no notes on the case, and case closed without contact. I've never seen any vendor support like it. I'm wondering what the difference is between support contracts. We paid for over 20 astaros for platinum support, and have yet to have anything resolved. I have support engineers making changes to astaros of mine, without calling me, and on the wrong units. Luckily I have you and others on this forum who actually provide intelligent input and prompt responses. I appreciate it very much. I hope at some point to return the favor to others in my position.

I've had a very different experience with Astaro support... I've found them to be rather good.  I would suggest that maybe you get your reseller to link you up with their channel rep to get your issues addressed.

Back on topic... did you get your units reset?

I was able to get into the 120 Astaro with hooking up the Keyboard and Monitor. I used the ifconfig command to find the interface IP address on Eth0 for webadmin. 

My interest in the console was for remote out of band management. The majority I have are 110/120's, and that isn't an option.

I'm now working on finding the procedure for reloading the OS from a USB CDROM, in case I have to reload any of these units from scratch. I'm not in need  to do so at the moment, but would like to have it, and possibly reload a unit from scratch in case it's needed.

I've done this loads of times on 220 and 425 appliances and it works perfectly every time.

One useful thing we found is to keep earlier backups of the appliance when it might have been at a slightly earlier version (ie 7.100, 7101 etc), because the SAI discs are sometimes a little bit behind the up2dates.
