Remote shutdown with script

Hello everbody,

is it possible to shutdown the astaro server remote with a script? The background of my question is to have a function to shutdown astaro when a windows server run on battery power from an apc ups.

Or is it possible to connect the astaro directly to the ups (smart-ups 1000 XL)?

  • Astaro supports APC and MGE (now both are the same company I think) UPS systems with USB connectors.  Just power down the Astaro, plug it into the UPS (the power and the USB connectors), and power it back up.  If you are running Version 7.x, you'll see what looks like a little Duracell battery in the Dashboard labeled "UPS", that tells you it's talking to the UPS.  There's supposed to be a bar graph there as well, but Astaro hasn't fixed that bug yet.

  • hello everybody,

I noticed that astaro supports UPS with USB-connectors, but I was wondering if it is possible to shut down the astaro by running a script. My situation is the same as in the original question in this thread, but I'd rather like to use a script instead of a USB-connected UPS.

I'm deeply grateful for every information.

  • Well, sure, you could shut it down via a script... even remotely if you're using a network management interface on a large UPS rather than small ones with USB connectors... just use a script that logs into the Astaro via SSH and executes "shutdown -h now" ....

  • ok, thank you! yes, we're using a larger UPS with a network management interface. so if there's a possibility for a remotely executed shut down, is it also possible to wake up the astaro on lan?

this'd be very useful when the power restored, then the UPS'd send a WOL-command to the astaro.
  • AFAIK, Astaro does not support WOL.  Make sure your Astaro unit is set to power on when power is returned to it (I would not shutdown the Astaro until a few minutes before the battery is depleted), and things should work fine.

  • If your hardware supports WOL when in the PowerDown (off) state, then WOL should work.
I have some Dell PCs (GX110?) that are able to do this.

But, as Bruce mentioned, almost all PCs have a feature to automatically turn on when power is applied.
