SATA & v6.303 vs. 7.101

my understanding of Sata is that ASG does not support the RAID arrays created in/by the BIOS, only those created by a seperate card that presents itself as a drive at boot stage.

Yes, I have read that on the forum. That is why I tried it without RAID enabled but ended up with the same result. ASG 7.1 does not seem to like SATA non-RAID even though they list the chipset as SUPPORTED!
 
I just removed one drive with my ASG 6.303 install and found that RAID (even though enabled) does not work. The primary drive will boot ASG but the secondary drive ends up causing a kernel panic error through the boot sequence.
'kernel panic not syncing: VFS unable to mount root FS on unknown-block (0,0)
 
I tried FDISK someone posted about and my suspicions were correct. It ended up damaging the array so now both drives report the kernel panic error. The RAID controller did report an error and posted “rebuild will continue after boot sequence is complete”.
 
I do have a 3ware 7506-4LP card which would probably work with ASG (even though that model is not listed) but it will not fit on my MB. I already have both PCI-X slots occupied in my Supermicro X5DAL-TG2 MB with two Intel PRO/1000MT Quad Port Server Adapters.
 
I wish ASG would really get on top of this SATA RAID support. Pretty much all MBs have gone this route. PATA is history and SCSI is expensive and really not required. The new dual and quad core processors are more than able to handle the RAID overhead so the excuse that a ‘dedicated controller’ is required does not hold much water anymore. I run SATA RAID on many PCs here using Raptor drives and they are just as fast as some of the 3ware based controllers I have.
 
PS. The NIC chipsets I am using although not listed as being supported do seem to work just fine.

My latest attempt uses a nVidia 690 which is not supported by much yet, so I had to resort to IDE. but due to a further problem with mysql not working I had to restore the one which I appears to have an intermittent hardware fault. Works okay if rebooted regularly.

I don't quite follow what you are saying here.
Are you using ASG with two SATA Raptors with the Via VT8237 chipset in RAID mode?

keep in mind 99% of all motherbord raid is not true raid..it's FRAID which is fakeraid. All it is is software raid run through a proprietary driver.  this means that most times you are nealy in pio mode instead of dma(if you try raid 5 in friad you are in pio mode jsut because of how raid 5 works).  Dont try to use motherbaord raid..it's relaly bad..just turn off the "raid" in the bios.
 
SIL is notoriously problematic even in the mainline kernel so the lack of support in v7 is not really surprising.

I understand the differences between the RAID platforms.
I would like to find some simple cost-effective method of having mirrored SATA drives without the expense of a $300.00+ RAID card.

what I was advising is that my current MB uses an onbaord SATA drive with a 10k raptor.

What I also was advising was I tried a new MB but the SATA drive wasn't found and I had to give up testing because mysql doesn't work on the MB.
