Software or Virtual Appliance ?

Dear all, 
I am about to build an ASG for my home network (I have 5 devices on my LAN in a private IP space), connected to an ADSL service.

I have a second hand Dell Dual Pentium Mini Tower which I plan to use as my Astaro Gateway.

I understand I have two options when building the gateway:

1) Build the ASG using the Astaro software appliance (which will delete all data on my hard drive and will result in my Dell box being dedicated as the ASG) or

2) Install Vista and VMWare Player on my Dell and install the Astaro Virtual Appliance. This way I could use my Dell simultaneously as a Raid storage and an Astaro security gateway.

My question is:

1) What is the recomended configuration to use (Option 1 or 2 above).

2) Are there any security issues running the ASG as a Virtual Appliance under VMWare in VISTA and using my Dell server for other things simulataneously (eg: as a Raid storage).

    It's always more secure to have a dedicated firewall protecting your network. Personally, I wouldn't feel safe with a Windows machine setup like that.

    If you did still want to do it that way, I'd recommend one of the VMWare server products, which would mean Vista would be a VM too, and wouldn't be the host OS.
    However, you wouldn't be able to play any games, etc., if you did it that way.

    Also, for any VM setup, you'd need at least 2GB RAM.

    For home use, Astaro runs fine on old hardware, if you have anything sitting around you might be able to put something together cheaply.

    Thanks barry for the advice.

    I may use my dual Pentium Tower as a raid and get another low spec PC for a dedicated Astaro gateway.

    What minimum spec PC do you recommend for an ASG?

    See my sig below... it runs great. I'd recommend 1GB though if you intend to use the HTTP proxy/content filter/anti-virus features.

    I used to use a Celeron 500, but the web interface was quite slow.
