Dual core CPUs - do they improve the performance?

Hi,
I have been reading up on some the theory of UTM from one of the security reviews. One issue they make much out of is the proxies make heavy work out packet analysis while the packet filter component is very quick in passing the traffic through.

So there are a couple of questions in my mind
1/. is the ASG software capable of using dual CPUs correctly?
2/. is the ASG software capable of assigning the proxies to one CPU and the packet filter/IDS/IPS and helpers to the other CPU?

    considering that astaro is linux based hte answer is depends.  The 2.6 kernel is very good with multiple processors(or cores).  The issue is really with the applications themselves.  If they are truly multi-threaded and written well then that applications performance will be improved by multiple cores.  If not then they won't.  From the base OS it's not an issue..it's mainly the applications that do the a/v and whathaveyou that determine the amount of or lack of performance gains.

    so in reality any kernel function will spread itself around which should include network connectivity, but other applications only time will tell. I would have to build a dual core firewall to try it out. The other question is when one of the apps goes made and ties up the CPU to 100%, will the other core allow normal telnet/ssh or webadmin to take control?

    I have the bits around here somewhere, I might give it a go.

    yes as long as the application doesn't have multiple threads lockup then yes only one cpu will get taken over..[:)]
