Installed 7.1 from ISO; can't surf web

I ran astaro for the past year on one of the latest versions of 6.x and then I saved a backup today. I then downloaded the 7.1 iso off the website and rebooted my dell Gx110 workstation (256mb RAM) no problem.  Installation failed initially but I unhooked my 2nd cdrom drive (found another posting on here where that fixed it) and that worked.

I imported my settings from the backup file in the 7.1 GUI but still couldn't surf the internet.  I enabled the http proxy and told it to use my internal network in transparent mode.  

DNS works fine because i can nslookup from the prompt and when i type in www.lmco.com it will resolve to www.lockheedmartin.com fine.  I tried using IP address and can't surf that way either. 

I also tried the crossover cable idea but the link light from the cable modem to the PC wouldn't come on.

My setup is pretty simple...pci nic for eth0 to the cable modem. onboard intel nic for internal 192.168.0.x traffic and administrative port.  

Everything worked totally fine with this configuration in 6.x so I don't know what happened...it literally happened by just changing versions.  

Any ideas??

I have a straight cable and I powercycled the cable modem multiple times.  When I try to go to an external website like yahoo, it just sits there and never connects and never time outs.  

Only thing interesting is that my external card eth0 says that the state is Up but the link is Down.  Both state and link say up for my internal card.  It really looks like this 7.101 really makes 7.100 even more futile for me.  CPU usage is at 9% and ram is 74%.  The only things active are my firewall and http proxy.

I'm baffled; I really don't want to have to go back to 6.x but I've spent an entire day trying to figure it out.  Also, i hooked up a laptop to the cable modem by itself and it worked great (10mb down, 1mb up).
