Need help on install of ASG 6 or 7

I'm at a loss of what is going wrong on my install of ASG, as I am running into several problems.  I am trying to install ASG on a old Compaq Deskpro with 733 Ghz processor, 320 Mhz RAM, 10 GB disk, built-in Compaq 10/100 ethernet, and added a Netgear 10/100/1000 Gigabit card (I think it uses the Realtek 8169 chip).  All these specs are on the low end but are within the requirements of ASG:

First I tried to install ASG 7.1:

  • I cleaned the drive using DBAN first
  • I booted with the ASG 7.1 disk I created
  • Set the Netgear NIC as the administrative card and hooked it up to another PC
  • Ran all the way to install, saw the checksum screen, then after that received an "Install Failed" message


When I look at the error log I see there is a issue with partitioning the disk.  There is only one HD which is set to primary and has no partitions.

Any thoughts on this one?

Secondly I tried the ASG 6 install:

  • I used the same settings as above and the install seemed to work fine
  • I rebooted the system, read the startup notifications during the boot process, then saw the login request
  • I waited for the "five beeps"
  • I then try to log in to the WebAdmin account via my connected computer using the default admin IP I selected: 192.168.2.100
  • The admin PCs browser can't find the IP

The NICs on the back of the Compaq are lit, so they are getting power.  The NIC on the admin computer works fine with other connections.

Once again, I am stumped.  I'm not very knowledgeble on Linux or on this sort of thing in particular, but I do like the challenge for a home system.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    There are several issues which can cause this. 
    First of all the specs you mention of your PC are futuristic. There are no 733 GHz CPU's it could only be 733 Mhz. The RAM, I think, is possible 320 MB which can't be correct.

    If you want to run ASG V6 a little bit more smoothly, you need at least 512 MB of RAM, the CPU could handle the services but you must have not a lot of users. ASG V7 needs more RAM & CPU Power !!!!

    If the installation of V6 went succesfully and it's up & running. You should check you ipnumber of your own pc and the subnetmask. For example: 
    ASG: 192.168.2.100/255.255.255.0
    your PC: 192.168.0.99/255.255.255.0

    You see that both nodes are on a different network-segment. You must change the ipnumbe of the AsG-box or your own PC!!!

    Also I'm not sure if the Gigabit-NIC is supported? you can check this on the Astaro-site...

    Thanks for the catch!  733 Ghz... That's actually the processor speed in my home brew death star that I'm building at home. ;^)

    As for increasing the RAM to run smoothly, I am fine with that recommendation, but I want to at least get it running in a basic setup to see if I can do it, then I'll buy more RAM.  This is a home installation where there are very few users.

    Good point about the IP.  My existing network runs from cable modem to wireless router to 8-port switch for wired connections.  Ultimately this box will be between the cable modem and the router, but right now I have been trying to run this without affecting the existing connections, so I have a cable running from my switch to the Compaq (Astaro) box via the Compaq NIC, then the Netgear NIC is connected directly to an old Mac for admin.  As this setup puts the box behind my router which uses DHCP, the router is assigning the IP, most likely something like 10.0.1.X, which may be causing the problem.  If I connect this directly to the modem and the PC, the login should then work, yes?

    As for the Gigabit-NIC, I checked the HCL and it looks like it is supported.

    Please let me know if the above strategy should work. I'll then give it a try tonight.

    Well, if I'm understanding it right, you want to test it first? Well that's a good thing. When using a standalone firewall you should have enough information and ideas how to set it up.
    I don't know how experienced you are with networks considering hardware/ip's etc. You must know in the first place what kind of network you are running. I mean with this what you're network id is and if you use DHCP or static IP's. Let me show in the following example:

    4 normal PC's with static ip's (I'll keep it simple):
    PC1 192.168.10.100/24 (=255.255.255.0)
    PC2 192.168.10.101/24
    PC3 192.168.10.102/24
    PC4 192.168.10.103/24

    If you want to setup the ASG-box, I would set it up like this:
    external interface eth0 (not connected because it's in test-environment)
    internal interface eth1 STATIC IP: 192.168.0.1/24

    When installing ASG V6/7 you can choose which NIC you will use for "administrating", so choose the right NIC!!! Enter the RIGHT IP number (in this case 192.168.0.1/24) and no gateway! After rebooting everything is in order. You should keep in mind if you use a "direct-cable" connection (1 UTP-cable between  NIC's) it must be a CROSS-CABLE!!!!
    otherwise they aren't able to "communicate" to each other. Then you could use a second switch and put both cables into the switch.

    When it's configured well you can setup the external NIC to use DHCP so it's getting it's IP form your cable-modem.

    So the final situation will look something like this:

    internet--cable-modem--assigned ip from cablemodem --EXT NIC ASG
                                                                                INT NIC ASG-- PC1/2/3/4

    Hopefully this will help you into the right direction....GOOD LUCK

    about installation of v7.1. it might that your hd is just to small. i had this problem when trying to install it on a unformatted 10gb hd (less then 10gb formated). swapped it for an old 40gb and all went well.

    i run v7.1 on a compaq small form factor p3 500mhz with 512mb box. this runs well for home use, internet is only 2mbps down anyway. only when copying files between lan and dmz the box is running on 100% cpu.

    Thanks for your suggestions, both of you. As for the problems with the ASG 7 install, I thought it could be the drive size, too. Since I didn't have a larger drive on-hand, I thought I would try ASG 6 before I spend money.

    On the ASG 6 install, I am still not getting a response from the box when I ping or try to reach the webadmin from a browser. I've tried both NICs with no success.  The one thing that I have not tried yet is putting a switch between the two, and this may be the ticket.  I'll give it a shot when I'm back home.

    Unfortunately the connecting the Mac and the Compaq Astaro box to a switch does not work either.  I'm at wits end on that setup.  Any other things that I can try?

    Can you tell us the IP address the mac has, versus the Astaro?

    When you asked about the admin pc ip it got me to thinking, as I had set that of before with a static ip when I attached it to another network.  I made sure it was in DHCP mode and the ip I was getting was an internal one and not from the astaro box. I tested a different pc and it could not get an ip from the astaro box either.  Is the only thing it could be at this point is a bad NIC?

    First off, thank you to all for your help.  I have now gotten to the webadmin screen and will be setting this up.  For the benefit of other new users, here is what I did to make it work:

    1) I gave up on installing 6 and focused on ASG 7
    bitonw's suggestion was right-on.  I decided that I would replace the 10 GB HD with my 40 GB HD from my mac. (I wanted to update the old mac with a SATA drive anyway.)  
    2) Once I replaced the drive, I cleaned it with Derik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN).  
    3) Once clean, I installed 7.1 and it completed successfully.  
    4) I setup the Admin PC by manually setting the IP to the Astaro default range.  The Mac using DHCP did not pick it up initially, so once I changed the IP, I was able to hit the Webadmin setup page by using https://192.168.2.100:4444.

    To the administrators, my recommendation is stating a higher HD GB requirement for 7.1.  Since a 10 GB HD is not really 10 GB usable space, that can cause some problems for new users.

    Thanks to everyone again and I'll let you know if I have any further issues.
