Hi there,

I was wondering if it would be possible to install ESX on a computer then install ASG 7.1 in one Virtual PC and ACC on the other Virtual PC.  Then have ASG 7.1 monitored by the ACC.  Would this be possible ? For testing purposes only.

I would in future get 2 computers running each one seperate.

    Yes, this works fine on either ESX or regular VMWare Server.  I'd recommend at least 2 NICs.

    How does this theory sound ?

    Computer has Athlon 4000+ CPU, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 3 X NIC

    Could I install ESX 3.  Then

    VM1 = ASG 7.1 (512MB RAM, 100GB)
    VM2 = ACC (512MB RAM, 50GB)
    VM3 = Windows 2003 Server with Exchange 2003 (1GB RAM, 100GB)

    3 Nics would be virtual on ESX ? So I could assign different IP'S to the three cards under each version ?

    VM1 = eth0 192.168.100.0/24 eth1 81.x.x.x eth2 192.168.105.0/24 (wireless)
    VM2 = eth0 192.168.101.0/24 eth1 81.x.x.x eth2 192.168.105.0/24 (wireless)
    VM3 = eth0 192.168.102.0/24 eth1 81.x.x.x eth2 192.168.105.0/24 (wireless)

    In theory I could point my MX records to eth1 (81.x.x.x) so ASG would receive mail, clean it and pass it on to VM3 eth0 192.168.102.0/24 my exchange server ? OR would I just configure ETH1 + ETH2 on VM1 as the other computers would not need it.

    eth2 would be connected to Wireless Access point with ASG configured for DHCP ?

    Would this work ? Just saves me buying another computer.

    Okay, I don't want to rain on your parade. I applaud that you are trying to learn how to use some useful software.

    But that is not enough hardware power to run what you want to run. I am saying this in an understated manner.

    Additionally, you don't have ECC RAM on that box, so you will get bit errors in your memory over time. VMWare is extremely memory intensive as are all the apps you mention. Bit errors means you will have data corruption, random crashes, etc. Think "12 Monkeys".

    Your memory allocations assume that ESX takes zero memory for itself. This is not the case.

    If you really want to get everything on one box, I would suggest getting a more powerful box. Maybe that is returning what you have bought and replacing it with a "real" machine. Or maybe that is upgrading your box to 4GB RAM so you have more memory for virtual machines. Maybe that is running a less demanding Linux-based mail server in a virtual machine instead of Exchange. Maybe that is buying another box vs. overloading one box. There are a lot of options.

    But unless you are tying to quality for some sort of disability based on a full mental breakdown, I would not recommend trying to get all the apps you mentioned running on a low-end box that does not have enough RAM and likely does not have a fast enough disk to support 2-3 hungry VMs. 12M.

    Ok... I will buy another computer to run ASG on and then use the existing one to run exchange 2007 (Which is used to do - Connected another hard drive to it to test ASG)

    I will try to get an ITX as I want to replace my existing router.
