Hardware Recommendation

I just ordered the following board for $60 and it should work.  This is the same board that is in that $200 linux pc at walmart.  It is a micro atx but is also about 1/3 the cost to the via epia boards.  I'll let you know if it works when I get it.

I am not a big VIA fan. If I had to build a small form factor system, I would use an Intel board, the Intel D201GLY.

It will run you around $60 including the CPU. Depending on your network setup, you may need to add an additional PCI network card. The board includes one 10/100 Broadcom port.

Now if you are going to use a lot of the Astaro features I would suggest getting a more powerful board that works with a dual-core processor and has 2 DIMM slots for easy/cheap support of more RAM. Both Intel and AMD make good lower power dual cores these days. AOpen, Albatron, and many others make good small boards that would work for you.

Personally, I am using an entry level Dell server as my Astaro box. It was on the Astaro HCL and it has worked like a champion.

I run http proxy (standard mode), smtp (outgoing), pop3, time manged PF and proxy access. 27 PF rules.

I run 2 internal and 1 external networks. The internal ones are VOIP on one and users on the other.

CPU sits around 2%, memory sits around 50%, I expect that to improve when v7.1xx is released into production.

One other question do you know of any other firewall software like astaro exist ?  The reason I ask is because I have tried a few and they all work on the computer system that I have already.  However, no matter what I do with ASG 7 it always gives me a black screen.

I find that astaro has very little support on their product.  I know it is open source... but would I expect this lack of support if I bought their hardware... hmmm

I have no personal experience with v7 yet.  But for home use I am sure you would be fine assuming there are no compatibility issues.  However I would suggest at looking for some of the 1.5 ghz platforms to give you that extra headroom.  You could build one of these for much cheaper than that box.

I would need a hdd too as I would like all the features of the home version.

If you choose to go with the Via EPIA boards that most other people have used successfully if might bump that up from $185 to about $300.  Either option is much cheaper.

Dell has a sale going on right now for the low end server. It is $250 with a dual core Pentium E, 512MB RAM, 80GB drive, CDROM, GigE, etc. This includes a one year on-site warranty, but shipping is extra.

That Pentium E is a low power processor based on the Core 2 Duo, but with 1MB cache instead of 2MB/4MB. Now Linux does not do as good a job with power management compared to Windows/Mac, so there will be some electricity savings if you go with a VIA chip (or the Intel board I suggested previously). But that Pentium E is also very high performance compared to a VIA chip. I cannot understate this as it will make a noticeable difference if you use your Astaro in any meaningful fashion.

If you can take advantage of this deal, you will get great hardware for a very reasonable price. The deal is in the Small Business section of the Dell site.

I try and stick to machines and/or motherboards that have a greater likelihood of working out of the box vs. fiddling around. So keep that in mind when you read my suggestions. The Astaro box I use is another Dell from the HCL and I have had zero issues.
