Power saving features in Astaro?

Just curious.  Under what circumstances do you think you'll be able to use any of the power saving features?  And not that you shouldn't be green anyway, but is it particularly important due to the technical or practical circumstances of your installation?  Most firewalls on the perimeter are at least somewhat busy all the time - 24/7  - and wouldn't necessarily have lots of opportunity to remain in a power saving mode unless there was simply no traffic.

That said, most fans and CPU speed settings. are enabled and controlled through bios settings (is that not available in the computers you're proposing to use?).  As such, they are generally determined by default circumstances outside the control of the O/S (Astaro Software), though there may be an interface program that allows access from the O/S.

We have multiple Astaro machines deployed. Very rarely do any of them use any significant amount CPU time, except when processing reports. The majority of the time, they could be running in the lowest power CPU state.

Even when our firewalls are "busy" and maxing out our internet connections (even our biggest pipe at 10Mbps) the CPUs themselves are hardly busy and could be running at a lower frequency.

In a datacenter (or anywhere else), saving power is very important. AMD Cool'n'Quiet and Intel SpeedStep both save huge amounts of power and are very well supported in any recent maintream Linux distribution.

Thank you for that link.  As a system admin at the company I work for, I'm constantly trying to convince my peers of the benefits of enabling power saving features.  If not on the servers, then at least on the many workstations throughout the company.  It's often like pulling teeth, though.  I'll forward that link along to a few folks to see if it helps me get any traction.

Keep in mind that the lesswatts.org site is focusing on power savings gains much smaller (1-5 watts typically) than what you'd get by setting the appropriate power settings on your monitor (15-150 watts) and CPU freq changes (5-30 watts) and standby/hibernate/power off strategies. It is still a good resource, though.

Absolutely.  The best place to start in a company is with all your workstations' monitor power saving settings, and we've done that.  Unfortunately I can't do a lot with computer standby, since most of our employees are developers who tend to fire off long, overnight processes then head home for the day.  They'll often also log in remotely to their workstations (via vpn) to check up on things.  Makes it sort of tough to do much power saving on those machines.

On the servers, however, we have 200+ of them in our building alone, and another 200+ in colocation.  We're currently heavily researching virtualization, which will cut a lot of power just by nature of using fewer machines.  On the remaining machines, though, it would be nice to have cpu scaling if feasible.
