torrents saturate my connection (nic problem?)

Perhaps you are running into a concurrent connection limit? You don't mention what type of license you have and how many connections Astaro says it is using.

How much CPU does Astaro say it's using?

I have a home user license.  But your insight on the connection limit helped quite a bit.  I was hitting >700 concurrent connections with my uTorrent connection limit @ 750.  After that its hard to tell.  The max log was 719, but I couldnt use the webadmin anymore.  I reduced the uTorrent limit to 100, and now it appears to peak around 250 connections.  This has helped drastically (other computer can still access the web, albeit slowly), but there is still noticeable slowdown when using the webadmin.  The webadmin spends a long time refreshing.  Is there a better way to look at the concurrent connections other than the webadmin bar graph?

As for my cpu usage, it maxes out around 22%.  Its a athlon 2400+ so I believe it should be able to handle the load.  However my 512mb of memory is very very taxed.  Using 85% of memory and 15% of swap.  Im going to export my settings, throw in two discreet network cards (intel pro 100 x2) and see if that helps.  I may also try to get some ram to go to 1gb+.

Im concerned because I seem to lose all connectivity well before the 1000concurrent connection limit.  From what I've read this doesnt appear to be hapenning to anyone else.  Thanks for the help, and any additional comments.

this sounds strange to me.
What kind of settings have you made in the QoS section, I made the mistake myself an entered too small values here, which slowed down the box dramatically.

BTW: 512MB should be enough, especially after the 7.100 up2date which lowers ram usage dramatically, especially if you use web security.

I tried playing with the QoS settings to fix my problem before, but I have all of my QoS settings disabled now.

my firmware is 7.011...and it says no newer firmware is available...am I backlevel?  I do have some websecurity settings, but I could clear some of them out (dont really need all of the preset content filtering) if that would help.

I've got a similar issue.

Whenever I run bitorrent,  my Astaro's CPU gets pegged at %100 or so (memory usage stays the same).

Web interface will become unresponsive at some point as well until I shutdown the torrent.

Hardware
P4 1.0Ghz
1GB of RAM (average usage is %36)
Intel NIC's
80GB SATA drive


I've played with a number of settings, port mappings, security settings, etc.. and I can't seem to figure it out.

I installed the 7.10 beta (7.075) and while I do see significant improvement to the responsiveness of the webadmin overall, I continue to have issues with torrents and an inability to hit the connection limit (peak ~451).  Even at ~200connections the webadmin often becomes completely unreachable.

Torrents are not my main internet use.  But it makes me weary of my Astaro firewall when playing games or other low latency apps.  Is Astaro capping my performance?  Obviously its not so horrible that I can percieve it during normal websurfing.

I haven't been able to get the box running with my other nics yet.  Im open to all suggestions.


UPDATE:  Ive tried out Azureus now too.  It works fine (tried getting something), but after a few minutes I lose all other connectivity until I shut Azureus down.  I go and look at the concurrent connections and its peaking around 300.  Can anyone suggest some NIC's that they have had success with.  Im on an nvidia based motherboard with integrated graphics (onboard nic disabled), does that raise any flags?

I wanted to update this post now that I have swapped out my 4 port znyx DEC/Intel 21142/43 based NIC for 2 Intel pci NICs (1x pro 100 s desktop adapter, 1x pro 100 management adapter).  Im happy to report that my performance is significantly improved!  I am able to run torrents well, and while slower (running on the same machine as uTorrent), my web surfing never fails to pull in pages.  I still have a bit of an issue with the webadmin speed, but that too doesnt become compeltely unreachable like it did before.  Honestly other than webadmin responsiveness I think this is pretty much on par with running directly on the cablemodem.  So Im putting my quad-port out to pasture.  Thanks to everyone who offered advice.
