Serial Console not working?

Trying to access the serial port on an ASG 220.    I am on a laptop with a USB-Serial cable. since the ASG220 has male ends, and so does the Serial cable, I have a D-SUB 9 pin F to F adapter. It's like this:

Laptop --> USB to Serial Cable --> F to F Adapter --> ASG 220 port.

I have configured the hyperterminal session as recommended in the manual. However, when I try to connect, it's just blank. I cannot do anything and I cannot see anything.

What am I doing wrong?

    I'm not sure about Astaro, but you often need a null modem cable (or adapter) for things like that.

    Hoping someone at Astaro could clarify.  It's great they tell you the parameters needed, now if they could just tell us what type of cable.

    Barry's right, you normally need a null modem cable for a console connection.

    AFAIK, There are two standard types of Null Modem cables:
    with wiring for hardware handshaking
    and without.

    The one with is the safe bet, but if you can't find one, you can always try one without.

    did you get it working ? we use a serial cable occasionaly, as we have an ASG220 VGA adaptor plug so use a monitor ... also you need a USB keyboard if acessing the console that way !!!  we used 38000,8,n,1 as our BAUD rate .. also used a free terminal prog called TerraTermPro (google it) as dont like the hyperterminal ... if needed will "buzz" out our cable to define the what works here ...

    I hooked up a Null modem cable but still no luck.  Regarding what type of Null Modem cable, I have no idea.. it's the only one they had at Fry's. Not too common anymore.

    I realized just now reading other posts that a better option is to just hook up a video cable. Once I realized I could also hook up a USB keyboard, that did the trick. I can now get control of the console from the box itself.
