Multi-Core CPU's and Astaro

1.) What's the extent of multiple core CPU support by Astaro software?

2.) In combination with Astaro software, do 4 cores (quad core) perform better than 2 cores?  Do 2 cores perform better than one core?  Or is one really fast core the best current solution?

3.) Does Astaro version 7 software handle additional cores differently than previous versions?

4.) What about in the VMM (virtual) environment?

what features do you want to use and how many users?

I expect this box to start at 25 users running everything except VoIP, encrypted e-mail, and maybe not all users will VPN, at least for now.  Down the road a bit I can see where growth could go to 35 users using all the features Astaro currently offers.

I have setup networks with that many machines on a 2.0ghz single core machine with a gig of ram with plenty of room to spare.

Based on what you're saying, it doesn't sound like additional RAM wouldn't do much if anything - though RAM is cheap, so having extra is not a financial burden.

As to the CPU, would a faster CPU or additional cores do anything for for this box?  And even if not in this particular situation, where is one likely to get the bigger bang for the buck with current Astaro software - multiple cores or faster clock speed?

How does Astaro deal with multiple cores?  Hypothetically, can each major function be processed as a separate thread?  In other words - how are the processes divided up by Astaro in a multi-core CPU environment (or does the OS retain control over all of it?).

Astaro doesn't seem to do anything special to optimize for multi-core systems, except to make them available for use.

I would expect diminishing returns for anything more than 2 cores for most setups. The big if is if you are doing a lot of content scanning for email and web browsing. I would expect that type of workload to scale to multiple processors fairly well.

As William says, for the workload you are expecting which is fairly light in the amount of content scanning it's doing, even a single core of ~2GHz with a gig of RAM would be plenty.
