Maximum Ram Astaro 6.x and 7.x Supports

Hi 

I am currently using a HP ML110G3 machine which comes with 4 Ram Slots.
Currently it occupy One slot with 512MB.

I am running the latest 6.311 and ram usage is 481MB, Free 168MB.

It is recommended by HP that for Ram Upgrade, it must be in same matched pair so that Dual Channel Mode Performance.

Thus since my first ram is 512MB at Slot 1, my second piece should be 512MB placed at Slot3.

After this upgrade, I would have 02 x 512MB (1GB) leaving 2 more slots available.

My question to all is, how much Ram can Astaro Support?

Reason I ask is I need to plan for the other 2 slots since I should buy in pairs thus it is a huge difference between choosing 02 x 512, 02 x 1Gb and 02 x 2GB.

After the addition of 512MB Above, my system would be 1GB.

1) Adding another 02 x 512MB = 2GB for entire system Max.
2) Adding another 02 x 1GB = 3GB for entire system Max.
3) Adding another 02 x 1GB = 5GB for entire system Max.

I am trying to Mimimize the waste of ram when upgrading while be ready for future Astaro Version.

HP Document mentioned that OS may need to be 64bit for more than 4GB Support, does this apply to Astaro since it is linux?

I read about 7.x have this feature whereby it tries to run everything from, Ram, so how much does it need?

I tried to compare with those Astaro Appliance to see how much ram they put in there but there is no hard ware specification.

Overall I am trying to

1) Maximize the Ram without Waste (Adding without wasting the current)
2) Make the full use of this server until the hardware fails and parts such as HDD is so obselete that cannot be replaced. Thus ensuring my Ram is sufficient for future release.
3) Not buying far too much ram when the Astaro would not even use it due to OS limitation. (ie: not going more than 4GB if Astaro indeed have that limitation)

    Astaro configures their kernels to support about 4GB of RAM max.

    Linux can support much more, but you need to rebuild the kernel to do so.

    IMO, 2GB total RAM should be sufficient, but if it's not much more, 3GB total RAM should give you plenty of room.

    At least now confirmed 4GB is the limit as compiling kernel is way beyond my knowledge.

    For those using Astaro in Very very high end enviroment, how much Ram does you system hit?

    This would help me decide 2GB and 3GB Upgrade.

    My only problem now is looking at my hardware everything seems good and under utilised but my Transparent is obviously slow.

    Thus hope with the Ram Upgrade can solve this issue.

    I'm having AGS on Dell 1900 - 4GB Ram. (500 users)
    The Astaro recognize ONLY 3GB, and the load is 50% average.
    Here is Astro guys answer:
    "The ASG-Software-variant only support 3 GB of RAM. Only the ASG-Devices have support for max. 4 GB. Therefor this is normal and will not be changed in the future".[:@]

    Also remember ASG memorey management will look like its using a lot of memory when in actual fact it has loads to spare, this is more noticable in v7.

    We have 2 425a boxes in a cluster and i have 2 gb in each.  i hardly see usage go above 25% and we have up to 3,000 users at college hitting the proxy, we also process around 10,000 emails through the SMTP Proxy each day

    I would expect that more than 3GB of memory will have little effect on performance, you are likely CPU or disk limited.

    Anyway, seems like 3GB is as much as you'll want to install on a ASG machine.

    CPU: Dual Xeon DC 2.8 - 50%
    HD: 120 GB - Hardly Used (maybe 25%)
    Swap - 0

    1) I have ordered 01 x 512MB and would update all on how it goes for now.
        Reason I ordered 01 x 512MB and not 01 x 1GB, 01, x 2GB etc is because existing is 01 x 512MB and with my limited ram knowledge, it seems to be a must for them to be same size to make use of the Dual Mode Channel.

    2) The Astaro Software supporting Only 3GB is a limit Both in 6.x and 7.x?
         If this is confirmed in 7.x then 3GB would be my choice going forward.

    3) Hopefully with the coming 512MB Addition, which should take over the swap, it should perform a lot better. My Transparent Proxy simply is far too slow to use.

    Try to Disable the HTTP Caching in the Web Security » HTTP.

    Yes, getting another 512MB in your machine will make a big difference. If you watch `vmstat 1` from the console while browsing and if you have any significant swap activity adding memory will help.

    Astaro has a memory misconfiguration that unless you stack the box with a ton of ram it'll swap.  You can either implement my tweaks(and loose support) or stuff the box with ram..or turn off the http proxy.

    Memory Usage is now
    Max: 844MB
    Free: 285MB
    Total: 1.04G

    Swap Usage is now

    Max:69MB ( I don't understand why there is swap when I have 285MB Ram)
    Free: 1.01G
    Total: 1.05G

    The strange thing is I do not see performance improvement.

    HTTP Transparent Proxy is still slow ( No Cache ) Only Antivirus and Antispyware.

    POP Proxy downloading mails is just as slow as before.

    turn off HT on your p-4.  that has been known to HURT performance in some situations(have to do that via the bios).

    If both pop3 AND http proxy are slow then you may have a disk or raid controller problem.
