Home use hardware selection, tried 4 boards

I've been using a P3 850 with 512MB ram. Worked great with v6. After the update to v7 its just overloading the installed ram. I've seen 70-90% ram and over 50% swap usage, at which point things become unresponsive. The cpu spikes as swap file usage increases (overhead for swap usage I assume) to where as the swap hits 40%+ the cpu is frequently 30-40% usage.

The P3 MB that I'm using will not take more than 512MB ram, so I cannot directly upgrade the system that way.

I have a ton of older hardware, but much newer than the P3. I'll list what I have tried to use to far.

P4M800PRO-M Via chipset MB tried with each of DDR1 and DDR2 (it supports both). This would allow install, and would run. After ~2 hours it would become unresponsive to where web admin didn’t respond and I could not login at console. Via chipsets are not officially supported on the HCL but this was a super low power solution (26w at the wall). Tried 2 of these boards.

P4M900T-M Via chipset, newer version of the above. Install fails at hardware detection.

Gigabyte 965-S3 Intel chipset (965). Fails at hardware detection. The 965 is on the HCL so I have no idea why this fails install. I get no other messages during CD install, just installation fails.

This is annoying. I have the hardware, I can build super low power solutions. Yet astaro either wont run it, doesn’t support it, or I cant get it stable.

The P4M800 I went so far as to install windows on it, and test stability there. Failed until I installed the correct drivers, after that I was able to run 100% cpu load (prime95) for hours (~12) without a single error. This implies to me that the issue is that I dont have the right drivers for the via chipset, does this make sense?

I'm not a linux guy, which is why I went with astaro about 4-5 years ago. No linux tweaking.

So either suggestions on how to get my hardware working, or what cheap MB that supports a C2D and is low power that will run on Astaro v7?

    what functionality are you using in v7? Further what version of v7 are you using.  v7.006 with packfiltering and a few other features enabled will run very well in 512mb of ram. If you are using an earlier version you might run into trouble.

    I have a 1gb system with 64mb share memory and most proxies, over 20 PF rules and time managed http proxy access. The system sits at 45% when idle and peaks at about 60%.

    This is a big improvement even over v7.005.

    I'm running 7.006 on the P3.

    I would have to go look for everything that is running. 4 proxy, 3 networks, PF, IPS, etc.

    Unless they continue to release more patches my P3 wont last more than 3-4 weeks at a time where on v6 it would go 6months or more.

    Mosty I want to be able to use the more modern hardware I have to remove the issue of bottlenecks for the next several years as the P3 did. As well as cut my power consumption in about half.

    I have the parts and cannot get them to work.

    v7 is a much bigger memory user simply because of a misconfiguration of squid combined with a misconfiguration of the kernel's memory management:

    secondly, you really need at elast 1 gig or more of ram for ANY astaro installation.  i run 512 because that's the max my machine will handle.  If you use the tweaks above you can make that system run well..except due to a DOS vulnerability http://www.hescominsoon.com/archives/773 your cpu is going to get hammered if you use bittorrent or anything that is going to cause a higher packet drop rae than a few pps. 

    short of going with a 3ghz cpu(which i think can still be dosed) your going to have cpu spikes that can last days.

    for your hardware issues..try passing noapic to the kernel before install starts.  also for any mobo disable onboard raid as that will hang astaro as well.

    I'd rather not edit the linux install, I want to use new hardware. 4 times the ram, cpu is at least 4 times the speed, and half the watts.

    Does anyone have a working v7 on a VIA chipset?

    If not what chipset/motherboard can I get that that will take core 2 duo cpu, 2GB ram, and work flawlessly with v7?

    I'm thinking Intel MB with Intel chipset would be best. What chipset will work? The HCL for v7 says they tested the 965, yet my 965 MB failed install.

    I just want something I can throw in the corner for another 3-4 years!

    VIA is always problematic, but the i965 should work. But maybe the HDD-controller can't be recognised by the Astaro-Kernel. I had such a problem with an ASUS P5P800 one year ago and I had to do some exercises with different BIOS-settings until it worked. I guess the HDD has to be /dev/hda and the optical drive must be /dev/hdc. You can check this, using the bash-box on another text-console.

    I'll check into that. How do I open a new console? Alt-F3?

    As far, as I remember, Alt-F3 is the console with logging-messages from the installation-script and with Alt-F2 you can open a new console.

    In many Board-BIOSes you can change the mapping of the controllers (standard, advanced or whatever). Using SATA can cause problems and then the drives won't be identified correctly. No drives - no installation....

    I had these problems two years ago with an ASUS board (P5P800 with SATA-HDD and IDE-DVD-ROM) and after changing to the correct mapping, the installation worked fine.

    Looks like you were completely correct. I couldnt get the 965 to work, has 3 controllers and it found those, but could never find a hdd. On the P4M900T-M I was able to have it find the hdd and its now installing.

    Hopefully this one will be more stable than the P4M900PRO-M.
