HELP! ASG220 update to V.7 problem

Well, after 3 hours, I finally had to do something and issued a reboot command from the console port.

Crossed my fingers and prayed that I did not have a new boat anchor.

Lucky for me, the ASG220 booted back to the previous working 6.311 configuration and we are back in business.

I'll tackle the V7 upgrade some other day...

To be honest, if you want to go to Version 7, I would:

1) backup the current V6 configuration (in unencrypted format, comes in handy if you have to restore via a USB stick)

2) Document your current configuration with screenshots (important)

2) Get the "sai" Version 7 image from your reseller

3) Install the image using an USB CD-ROM drive (it's all automatic)

4) Log into the "new" webadmin, just answer the few questions up front, skip the wizard.

5) up2date the install to Version 7.006

6) Import your V6 backup...

7) configure all the stuff (IPS, Proxies, etc.) that the conversion doesn't handle.

That's how I'll be handling the upgrades... that way, the worst that can happen is that I have to reinstall V6 and stick the USB stick in.

One note, the past couple of 220s I've had to reimage (I'm a reseller) did not have their BIOS set correctly to allow boot from the CDROM.  I had to open the case, hook up a video cable, and use an USB Keyboard to set the unit so it would boot from the CDROM drive... if your unit won't install the V7 image, this is likely to be the problem.  Most of my customers will probably just pay me (a reasonable fee) to do it for them after-hours.

due to the release of the V7.006 update  two days ago our up2date servers might be overloaded which can also negativly effect the download of the V6-V7 upgrade package.

This issue will resolve itself over the next days.

Brucek - my ASG220 is right at 2 years old. In your experience, would the USB boot/video issue most likely be something that I would run into or have you noticed a particular age of hardware where the extra effort was required? Also, as to your suggestions of things to do prior to the upgrade - I must have learned something over the years of getting burned, because I saved config files and screenshots, but thanks for reminding me - or someone else who is reading this.

Gert - the firmware download for my 220 appeared to work fine and the box checked the file signature and said all was o.k. and that it was proceeding to step 3, updating the firmware, when it just hung for hours. Would the extra load on the Up2Date service come into play at that point or not?

I do not have a reseller. I purchased directly from Astaro initially. I would like to be able to use the automated Up2Date process if at all possible rather than muck around with the internals. My next window of opportunity won't be for a few weeks.

I've seen it on hardware of differing ages; frankly the only way to be sure would be to hook up a monitor to it and check the BIOS (or stick a USB CD-ROM drive on it, and wait to see if it loads -- I'd rather check ahead of time myself)

As far as your up2date process, it sounds like, if it says it finished the download, that your problem is not with the up2date servers being busy, but some other problem.  I will probably continue to perform the platform migrations as I mentioned in a previous post, just because it gives me more control over the process.

As far as not having a reseller, Astaro is not supposed to be selling direct anymore, at least in the States... call them up and have them assign you to a reseller, I've had several assigned to me both in and out of my region.

Lou, I have two ASG220. I had the same issue on Saturday 7/28. Download took over 4 hours. Step 3 took over 2 hours. I restored my config using the v6 upgrade tab. No internet connection after restart. My network definitions all had 0.0.0.0. My network interfaces had some NAT configs but some didn't. I did a factory reset. Now I can't login to the box from my desktop.  Luckly I have two boxes. The other one is still running v6 and is still up and keeping my users off my back.
I also have had my ASG for 2 years and have had to reinstall from bootable USB CDROM. To Bruce's credit, hooking the video and keyboard up has worked wonders in the past, if nothing else, to see what is going on. As stated, you have to remove the cover to connect the video port.
This upgrade has not been a very comfortable experience

Try the method I outlined earlier in this thread; it has worked well for the units I've upgraded.

Lou, what can you see in /var/upgrade/upgrade.log ?

You might want to monitor that file to decide what's going on during the firmware upgrade.

Thing is, if the upgrade fails it won't tell you by itself. It'll just exit and leave you wondering to restart or not.

I have not looked at the log file you mentioned but using the ASG220 log file query process, here is what was happening in the system log right before-during-and right after ht upgrade attempt. The time between 09:12 and 12:09 is roughly the time period where the box sat with the "Astaro Security Gateway" display and appeared dead to the world. Oddly, a query of the up2date log revealed not a single entry during the time period.

Thanks, but /var/upgrade/upgrade.log is really the file that (still) contains what did or did not happen during the upgrade.

Gain console access (SSH) and reveal the content of your upgrade.log file.
