Via C7-D Support?

Hi People,
I see that it is not "officially" supported in the HCL, but is anyone running a Via C7 machine with the VIA CN700 Digital Media chipset?

Walmart has a $300 low power machine(2-20W) available now. I thought it would make a good box to stick the personal version of Astaro on?

Any thoughts?

Astaro is working great on my EN12000EG.

You should also check out some of the (low-power) Core 2 Duo Mobile systems from logicsupply...

Barry,

I finally got a response back from everex. They say the PC has one PCI slot which the modem occupies so hopefully one can just yank that out and have room for another network card.

Cool... hopefully it's a full-height PCI slot, so a multi-port NIC could be used.

Barry,

I just managed to get my hands on one of these. They(Wal mart) had these for $273 now. Works great other than Astaro not picking up the SATA controller which I am kind of bummed about. I did manage to stick an IDE drive in and after that it runs great.

Funny thing is the webadmin interface comes up faster (caching objects) on this box then my production dell server at work.

You may be able to get the SATA controller working by tweaking some BIOS options (try setting the controller to RAID if it supports it for example), have you tried?

Good to know it works otherwise, though! Should make a great low power draw firewall!

Drees, ..Yes, I did try setting it to RAID and it still could not detect the disk. (boo!)

Barry..the modem takes up a PCI (full height) slot. I just took that out and added a D-Link card. There is also a PCI-E slot in there also that is not used.

Hi ScottL,

I can confirm from several installations that Astaro runs very well on VIA C7 CPUs and VIA CN700 Chipset. You will however have to make sure that the onboard NIC as well as optional NICs are supported. I noticed that the much discussed but unfortunately not supported Realtek 8110SC Chipset is VERY common around such hardware.
