Beginners questions

I heard about ASG on "Security Now" and have installed it on a 800 Mhz Pentium III computer. According to the manual there is on the Astaro knowledgebase instructions how you use ASG with an ordinary DSL connection, but I cannot find it. Maybe somebody here have a link?

The install went just fine. I also can reach to web admin from my pc. But I don't know how to connect the system to my dsl modem so I can surf the web and use my mail.
 Is this the correct setup?

I connect the dsl modem to the first network card on the ASG, the card that my admin pc uses.
I connect the other network card to the hub.
I the connect my pc to the hub, too.

I use PPOE to connect to my ISP.
I enable DHCP so my pc get an IP adress (or should I use static adresses instead? Last time I enabled dhcp, my admin pc lost contact with ASG and i had to reinstall the software)

After that, i'm somewhat lost.

    Welcome to the ASG world. I will assume you are using v7.***

    When you first start using an ASG it is best to make the LAN (NIC) connection you use for your initial config your local LAN and the other card your ADSL connection.

    1/. you set the modem up in bridge modem
    2/. you set the interface which will be your external interface as ADSL and put in the details.

    Basic setup of your ASG will be
    1/. packet filter rule internal network -> any (protocol) -> any -> allow
    2/. NAT rule - MASQ internal network -> external interface

    This will get you talking to the internet and then we can help you with next step of improving your ASG experience.

    Ok,

    My modem is bridged and I have configured ASG according to you advice. But after that I lost contact with ASG. I cannot log in to the system.

    What kind of system are you using?  Version 7 does make this easier for beginner users; there's a wizard at the first login to WebAdmin that allows you to select DSL as an option... you do still have to configure your DSL Modem / Router in bridged mode, as a previous poster pointed out.

    The problem is  that I can't burn a working cd with v7. I get an "installation failed" everytime. I have tried different burning speeds, different cd burners, defferent hard drives etc, but it does not work. I have no problem at all to burn v 6. It works like a charm.

    Did you try redownloading the iso image by chance?  Yours may have gotten corrupted in transit.

    Are these messages you are getting while trying to BURN the CD, or during an attempt to install?  If it's during an attempt to install, could be an issue with your hard drive geometry.  Try changing your LBA setting in the BIOS (if it's set to Normal, set it to LBA, or vice versa, as the case may be).  If it's during the burn process... I guess try a different burner and / or burn program.  I've burned plenty of V7 and V6 ISOs with good results on different burners.

    Thank you for your answer. The problem only occurs when I am trying to install ASG 7. Burning a CD is no problem. If I use ASG 6, I can also install the software without problem. I have burned CDs using two different cd burners on two different computers.

    Try installing ASG 7 in classic mode--also try the LBA trick I mentioned.

    I changed hard disc and the install went just fine. One more problem, though. I can't get into web admin from my admin pc.
    I try to connect to https://192.168.2.100:4444

    My admin pc uses the following settings:
    IP: 192.168.2.100
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Standard Gateway: 192.168.2.100
    DNS: 192.168.2.100

    I can ping ASG.

    Hmm.. that's wierd... I don't recall ever being able to ping a new install of ASG... try unplugging all network interfaces from the ASG, and then try to ping... you may have another system on the network with the same address...

    Also, did you change the hard drive, or just the LBA setting?

    Bruce, thank you for answering. 

    I changed the hard drive - nothing else.

    You're right! If I disconnect every cable from the ASG, I can still ping the adress. I can do it even if no PC is connected to my hub...

    Run IPCONFIG on your workstation (or if it's linux, run ifconfig)... I bet you have it set locally on your workstation...
