I'm totally new to firewalls and the like so need some basic advice.

I run a linksys 4 port router (ADSL) which currently has 3 machines and a printer attached. If i want to add astaro as a firewall i take it i plug one nic from my firewall pc into a port on the router and the other nic into a switch or hub. The other pc's and printer i then plug into the same hub.
Is that about correct.
I dont mind playing around with the software/hardware configs as its easy to put back to my original setup, but hopefully you will appreciate i need to start somewhere.

That'll work, but it'd be best if you can set the DSL router to 'bridged' mode so you're not doing double-NAT.

Does that mean that everything just passes through and is then controlled by Astaro, or would the router retain some control?

In bridge mode your router will act as a simple modem, the Astaro will be in charge of everything, including PPPoE connexion
