After successful installation - system starts with an black screen

Hi,
one of two things
1/. the power saver on the monitor has cut in (gets me every time)
2/. You are using a display card with a DVI interface which doesn't default in ASG.

Hi Ian,

the Monitor ist ok. The problem is the s3 savage4 onboard graphic adapter. 
After I inserted a ald cirrus adapter, the system works fine. But I've one problem. I've only 2 PCI Slots and one is needed for quadport network adapter and one for scsi raid adapter.

Have a look in nth e bios to see if you can change the display to use some more ram or its default minimum values. I had a PCI card behave the same way while trying to build a minimal system. Gave up eventually and put in a later model card but removed the fan.

You might have to give up the SCSI array and use a single drive. Is this a home system? A single IDE drive of about 40gb is plenty and the 1.3ghz should work fine, depends on what you are doing and you external connection speed.

I had a similar problem getting ASL 7 to work on an older motherboard.  It required the use of the 'classic' option to do the install and then it would just hang on bootup afterwards.  It turned out that the extra options weren't added to the grubs menu.lst.  I would suggest adding them manually and see if it fixes your problem.
 
The motherboard I have requires the "nolapic noapic acpi=off" options on the kernal boot line. In v6 this was easily done by using the classic option at install time. Strangely enough I thought that the same would work in v7, however the classic in v7 only adds those options for the install and fails to add them into grubs menu.lst. I can't believe that ever got missed.
 
You can add these options at bootup.

 I thought it was worth mentioning that unless you want to edit that line every time at boot, you'll have to edit the menu.lst file in /boot/grub/ as root.  In order to do that, you'll first have to edit your /etc/fstab and remove the "ro" option on the /boot line.  That ro is mounting the /boot partition in read only mode, so the file is un-editable until you change that and either unmount and remount the /boot partition or just reboot the system.

I suggest switching on SSH access via web interface, and then doing the above suggestions using a tool such as Putty.
