upgrade from asl 5 to asl 7

I logged into my web admin this morning and noticed the copyright 2004 in the corner, which just felt kinda old. this led me to think about how long i'd let my home gateway go without even thinking about if updates were available. so, i logged in and i clicked on my home use license just to look at it, and what should i notice but an upgrade license to version 7 button.

so i have two questions for you guys...
first off, is it even worth upgrading to version seven? From reading the forums it seems like it's giving a lot of people problems.
and second, can i easily upgrade from asl version 5 to asg version 7 without having to set everything back up again? the machine i'm using to run astaro isn't that great (750mhz pIII/128/10gig). i don't guess there's a nice home use licence for version 6 floating around anywhere? any input anyone has on version 7 and making the transition would be greatly appreciated.

    I think your version 5 license will work in v6.

    7 still has some issues with the newer features, so you might want to try it on another hard drive, so you can go back to 5 or 6 if needed.

    There is currently no way to import older configurations into v7.

    Your CPU is probably OK, assuming you only have a few users, but you'll need more RAM (at least 384MB, more if you're using the web proxy) and possibly a larger HD.

    so i can't import settings from v5 to v7, but if i can use my v5 key in v6, is there a way to import settings from v5 to v6 instead? the more i read about v7, the more it seems like a pain, but i'd still really like to upgrade to v6...

    you can import your v5 backup into v6

    It is probably best to upgrade from v5 to v6 first. Then you can upgrade from v6 to v7 later.

    i don't think that 384MB are enough to use the http-proxy... My Epia with 512MB is really slow and swapping a lot with proxy enabled - i give up using it with my current hardware.

    barry- thanks for the tips. i had no problem installing the license. I did run in to a bit of a problem with the backup, however. I'm running ver. 5.1 on my current box, and ver. 6.3 will only accept backups uploaded from ver. 5.200 or above. I suppose the only way to deal with this is to set up a third machine running 5.2, load my 5.1 backup file on there, and then export a new 5.2 backup file? any eaiser workaround would be appreciated.

    Can't you use up2date to get to 5.2?

    I'd recommend only downloading 1 update at a time to avoid the risk of running out of disk space.

    i downloaded the 5.101 update and it did the same thing... couldn't apply.

    Not sure what to do here, see if Astaro support has an idea...
