What is bin/auisys.pl used for?

You are probably refering to /sbin/auisys.plx, which is the up2date package installer. I can't think about any reason why it would run for 4 hours eating up processing time and that amount of RAM. You can find details of what it's doing in the up2date.log file.

thank you, I took the details from the webadmin support report.

That would explain why it started at approx 6.30am, because there was a big external network spike about then, maybe a large anti-virus/spam update went wrong.

In case of a problematic pattern up2date package everyone out there with automatic pattern up2dates enabled would have had that problem. Since I haven't heard anyone else report that I don't think it's the case. Can you please check your logfile about what might have gone wrong at that time? And what did you do to remedy the situation?

problem started again this morning my time.

Email worked okay, but external web pages wouldn't connect. I checked the ASG via webadmin and nothing appeared to be using too much CPU.
I reveiwed all my e-mail then tried to access the web, no connections, proxy was refusing connections. Logged on to the ASG again, tried to change pages and nothing happened. The temperature of the ASG CPU indicated the something was hogging the CPU. Attempted to logon via the console, but found there was dump on display.

I had to power cycle the ASG to get control back.

I have checked the logs and the only one I can find that would appear to be of interest is the kernel log which I have attached. It shows the problem starting at 0651, but I cant relate that to any other item in any of the other logs.

This evening, Webadmin went on strike and wouldn't update and the processes wouldn't die when disconnected, from "top" there was about 6 copies of webadmin running. A shutdown/restart from webadmin fixed the problem and the ASG is working very well.

Received another "Oops" message on the console, this time for a different app.
Maybe something is dying?

"Oops" messages are kernel errors, typically these occur either because of a kernel bug or hardware issues.

That would be my guess too. Since you have those kernel Oopses with certain regularity, but always from different processes I'd bet on a hardware problem. Maybe bad RAM?

How about a different angle. On the my main PC I used to have alot of problems with USB and some apps addressing low memory and getting access permission issues, still do occasionally, but a change of software installer fixed most of the issues.

These "Oops" messages only seem to have occurred since I enable USB support and they all are for very low memory addresses. As I haven't actually used the USB support function yet I might do rebuild and remove the USB config. I was planning on installing from a USB CD drive, because a couple of my spares failed including the one in the ASG. All the replacement drives are way too long to fit comfortably in the box.
